Biography

John White was born 18 Sep 1757, in Mansfield, Massachusetts [1] and is the son of John and Mary (Grover) White.

As a Revolutionary War patriot, John was a Minute Man from Mansfield that marched from Mansfield in response to the Lexington Alarm at the Battle of Lexington April 19, 1775. On April 23, 1775 he enlisted in Captain Moses Knapp's Company of Colonel Joseph Reed's 13th Continental Regiment of the MA Continental Line as a private. His unit remained in Boston and was stationed on Brookline Heights during the Battle of Bunker Hill. He served in engagements at Long Island, Harlem Heights and White Plains. He was reportedly among the last to escape during the retreat from Long Island.

In June of 1776 a plot against the life of George Washington occurred. The ringleader, Thomas Hickey, was arrested, confessed his crime and was sentenced to be hanged. When Hickey was hung, on June 28, 1776, John White was one of the guard of 52 men, picked from as many different companies, who performed that duty.[2] He was honorably discharged on account of poor health on December 26, 1776.

He married Lucy Tucker on April 19, 1780[3] and they moved to Packersfield (later Nelson), NH about 1781.[4] John and Lucy had three children, John Jr (b. 1782), Lucy (b. 1785) and Isaac (b. 1790). His Find A Grave Memorial has links to those of family members.[5]

John White died in Nelson on December 21, 1846,

John was buried at Nelson Cemetery, Nelson, New Hampshire.
