Biography

Doyle Whitehurst was born on 12 January, 1909 in Tampa, Florida, USA^[1] to Milton Whitehurst and Olive "Ollie" Graham.^[2]

Growing up very poor with little possessions, Doyle put himself through business college. He eventually rose to become general manager and part owner of Knox Inc., a primary business in Tampa. He managed the Hotel Knox, a bar, and a chain of seven Knox Hardware stores in the Tampa Bay area. When the main property in downtown Tampa was sold to the city for their courthouse annex, he and a partner started Sultana, Inc., a successful building and real estate company that at one time owned about half of what today is Clearwater, Florida. They also built all of the small starter homes around Busch Gardens. In 1968 Doyle built The Big W Car Wash which quickly became the favorite of Tampa.^[3]

Doyle was married twice.^{[4][5][6][7][8]} He had two sons, Russell and Raymond, with his first wife, Marguerite Greathouse. He had a son and a daughter with his second wife Evelyn Hayes.

Doyle Whitehurst passed away in 1997 at the age of 88.^[9][10] He is buried in the Whitehurst Family plot in the Oak Grove Cemetery in north Tampa, Florida.^[11]
