Jesse Wheeler has been an enigma. In 1845 he bought the estate of his father, John Wheeler, from the rest of the family. On the 1850 Hall County, Georgia, Census he was shown to be 27 and married to E.C. He was born in Georgia; E.C. was born in SC. They had 5 children ranging in ages from 6 years to 6 months--all born in Georgia. Jesse moved to Alabama before 1860. But another Jesse Wheeler from SC also moved there. The families identities have become somewhat confused. Using the 1850 Hall County, GA census, the 1860 and 1870 AL census, the family has finally been settled upon. James Henry Wheeler, son of William Wheeler, and Jesse Wheeler, brother of William Wheeler, must have moved to Winston County, AL about the same time. That time would be 1859 or 1860. James Wheeler's youngest child (3 months) was born in AL. Jesse's youngest child (1 year old) was born in GA. The 1860 census showed that all the children were born in SC. However, that appears to have been a mistake. The 1870 census showed that the children were born in GA or AL. Ditto marks were used on the 1860 census. The 1850 GA census showed all children at that time were born in GA. Jesse Wheeler died between 1866 and 1870. That date was derived from birth of last child, Wesley Wheeler, born in 1866. No information available on the first two children, Nancy (17 in 1860) and Elizabeth (15 in 1860).
