Biography

John Wheeler Jr was born before 1775 in Louisa County, Virginia to John Wheeler and Mary Tisdale.[citation needed]

In the 1840 census John was in District 505, Hall County, Georgia. He was the male age 70-79, and others present were 1 male under 5, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, and 1 female 15-19.[1]

Research Notes

* In the 1830 census the older John Wheeler, William and the younger John Wheeler all lived near Chestnut Mountain and Flowery Branch. This is near the Gwinnett and Hall County line. The Chamblees, Carrs, Waynes, Pughs etc. lived nearby. See Shadburn, Don, History of Forsyth County, Georgia, as well as Gone to Georgia, for early info on Wheelers in Georgia.

* Land Records: Drew 2 blanks in 1805 Georgia land lottery from Jackson, County, indicating he had a family. John and James were both in the 1817 Jackson County Tax index. John Wheeler was in Jackson County by 1801. Later tax records show that he had 134 acres on Oconee river. 1820 Tax Digest, Captain Haggards District, John Wheeler, 134 acres , Jackson County. 1821 Tax Digest, John Wheeler 134 acre's, Jackson County. 480 acres, 7th District, Irwin Co. ( Probably from Land lottery) 250 acres. 4th District, Walton Co. Also shown in 1825 Tax Digest.

* January 15, 1824, John Wheeler sold 134 acre's on Oconee river for $134.00. Probably when he moved to Hall Co. On November 17, 1845 the other heirs of John Wheeler sold about 495 acres of land to Jesse Wheeler, their brother, evidently part of John Wheeler estate. A portion of the land was formerly in the 7th District of Gwinnett County, now in Hall Co. Deed of conveyance and indenture, John Wheeler, heirs to Jesse Wheeler, July 3, 1846, Hall County, Georgia. In 1846 William and James were in Forsyth and Gwinnett Counties, Jesse was in Hall County, and John, Nathan and Henry were in Cherokee County. The daughters, Nancy, Lucy, Sarah and Mary were in Cherokee Co. A John Wheeler from Jackson County, Georgia. drew in the 1805 Georgia land lottery.
