Biography

Nancy (Wheeldon) Dement was a Hoosier.

Nancy Catherine was born in 1834 in Decatur, Indiana. She was the daughter of James Franklin Wheeldon Sr and Selah Falconbury. She married John Dement (also spelled Demint) in Sept 1854 in Decatur, Indiana. They had at least 4 children born in Indiana, including:

1. Orlando Dement, b. ca. 1856
2. Harrison “Harry” Dement, b. ca. 1859
3. Ezzebelle “Bell” (Dement) Mourey,b. ca. 1860
4. Flora Dement, b. ca. 1863.

By 1860, they were residing in Azalia, Sand Creek Township, Bartholomew, Indiana. Her husband John had passed away in 1864 while serving in the Civil War. On 5 Oct, 1866, she filed for her husband’s Civil War Pension.

In 1870, Nancy Dement, a widow, was living in the Geneva Township, Jennings, Indiana, with their four children.

By 1900, she was living with son Orlando in Wayne Township, Marion, Indiana. She remained with him until she passed away in 1917 In Wayne, Township of Marion County, Indiana. She is buried in the Scipio Cemetery in Scipio, Jennings County, Indiana along with her husband.

Addendum

Nancy Catherine is often conflated with her cousin Nancy Elizabeth (Wheeldon) Puckett, daughter of Cornelius Wheeldon. They were both born in Indiana about the same time. Some online trees show that they are the same person, but they married different men and had separate families. Nancy Catherine, daughter of James Wheeldon, was married to John Dement. Nancy Elizabeth, daughter of Cornelius Wheeldon, was the wife of Henry Puckett. (James Wheeldon and Cornelius Wheeldon are brothers—both sons of John Wheeldon Sr. —which make both Nancys first cousins).
