Willie Wells was a Hall of Fame Baseball Player who starred in the Negro Leagues. He was among the finest defensive shortstops to ever play and was known to be an all around player.[1]
Willie James Wells was born in 1905. He passed away in 1989.
A FamilySearch family tree listed Willie James Wells (1906-1989) as the son of Godfrey Wells (1876-1926) and the grandson of Appleton G. Wells (1859-1921) and Florida Felder Wells (1854-1929).[2] More documentation is needed to confirm or negate this lineage. A Willie Wells was listed in the 1920 census in a household with an Apperson and Florida Wells, however the family tree connects him to Godfrey as father. Godfrey has a son Godfrey Wells Jr. (abt.1907-1929) who died in 1929 and would appear to have been the child listed in the census who would probably be identified with Willie.
In 1910 a Mack Wells (58, b. MS, farmer, married 21 years, both parents b. U.S.) headed a Williamson County, TX household with wife Nora Wells (47, TX, washer woman, married 21 years, 8 children with 7 living, both parents b. U.S.), daughter Bettie Wells (22, b. TX, private family cook, single, father b. MS, mother b. TX), daughter Meatrice Wells (15, b. TX, washer woman, father b. MS, mother b. TX), daughter Martha Wells (12, b. TX, father b. MS, mother b. TX), boarder Rob Thomas (27, b. TX, RR laborer, single, both parents b. TX), grandson Willie Wells (4, b. TX, both parents b. TX), and grandson Arthur Wells (1, b. TX, both parents b. TX). Is the profiled Willie the same as the Willie enumerated in this census? Mack Wells (1855-) was the father in this household.
In 1920 an Apperson Wells (68, b. TX, farmer, married, both parents b. TN) headed a Washington County, TX household with wife Florida Wells (61, b. TX, both parents b. AL), grandson Willie Wells (15, b.TX, both parents b. TX), grandson Henry Wells (6, b.TX, both parents b. TX) and nephew James Wade (17, b.TX, farm laborer, both parents b. TX). Is the profiled Willie the same as the Willie enumerated in this census? Apperson G. Wells (abt.1850-1921) was the head of this household.
