Biography

George Earnest Welch was born in the family home in Victoria, British Columbia on May 22, 1900[1]. Earnest, as he was called, was the son of Herbert Welch and Mary French.

At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, Herbert H., Mary, Herbert John, Mary L., Edna B., and George E. Welch were listed as living in Victoria, British Columbia[2].

At the time of the 1911 Canada Census, Herbert, Mary, Herbert, Lillian, Edna, Earnest, May, Minnie, Doris, and Phyllis Welch were listed as living in Vancouver[3].

Earnest enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Victoria on January 12, 1917.[4] As many young men did at the time, he lied about his age to get in. Earnest served in World War I and was returned to Canada in September, 1917, where he died of appendicitis in Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, British Columbia on May 28, 1920[5]. He is buried in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.[6].
