Marmaduke was a Friend (Quaker)

From the History of Bucks County, W. W. H. Davis, page 136:

Marmaduke Watson, second son of Mathew and Anne, was married at Burlington Meeting, 1 mo. 27, 1718. to Elizabeth Pancoast, daughter of William and Hannah (Scattergood) Pancoast. He inherited from his father large tracts of land in different parts of West Jersey, allotted as part of the one-twelfth share of the province, among them a tract in Bethlehem township, Hunterdon county, on the Musconetcong creek, which he devised in his will to his son Aaron. This will is dated in Chesterfield township, Burlington county, 3 mo. 14, 1746, and was proven July 24, 1749, and mentions, beside the son Aaron, wife Elizabeth, son Marmaduke, and daughter Anne, wife of Joseph Curtis.

From Descendants of Matthew Watson:

The will of William Pancoast of Mansfield Township, dated 19 March 1739/40 and proved 28 August 1742, devised his estate to Elizabeth, wife of Marmaduke Watson, to Hannah, wife of Matthew Watson, and others.'
Marmaduke Watson was born 13 October 1685, second son of Matthew and Anne (Pierson) Watson of Chesterfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, and died there testate in 1749. Marmaduke Watson, son of Matthew late of Chesterfield, deceased, and Elizabeth Pancoast, daughter of William and Hannah (Scattergood) Pancoast of Mansfield Township, both of Burlington County, New Jersey, were married by Friends ceremony 27 March 1717/18 at Springfield Meeting House, according to certificate recorded by Burlington Monthly Meeting. The Minutes of Chesterfield Monthly Meeting 6 July 1749 state that William Murfin was appointed treasurer in place of Marmaduke Watson, deceased. The will of Marmaduke Watson of Chesterfield Township, yeoman, dated 14 May 1746 and proved 24 July 1749, devised to his wife Elizabeth, to sons Aaron and Marmaduke, and to daughter Ann Curtis and her daughters Diademe and Elizabeth; appointed his wife and son Marmaduke executors.

Marriage

Marmaduke Watson, second son of Mathew and Anne, was married at Burlington Meeting I mo 27 1718 [O.S.] to Elizabeth Pancoast daughter of William and Hannah[1] (Scattergood) Pancoast.[2] Marmaduke's father Matthew was a chemist who immigrated to New Jersey in 1683, from Scarborough, county York, England, with his wife Anne.[2]

Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, Intentions of Marriage and Certificates of Removal, 1685-1756, page 6 of 83:

6 Feb 1717/1718 Marmaduke Watson, certificate to Burlington Mo. Mtg., to marry Elizabeth Pancoast

The following quote from the monthly Meeting of Burlington and Rancocas, is evidence that the Monthly Meeting for Marmaduke Watson was Chesterfield, New Jersey.

"Marmaduke Watson and Elizabeth Pancoast appeared Appeared at this meeting the Second time and declared their Intentions of Marriage it being ye Second time of their appearance. And ye said Marmaduke produced a Certificance [sic] of from Chesterfield Month Meeting as also a few lines from his Mother which gave good Satisfaction and therefor left to their liberty to Solemnize their Intention whom they shall see moote."[3]

Marmaduke, inherited "plantation I now dwell on" from his father
Ann, m. 1740 Joseph Curtis

Property

He inherited from his father large tracts land in different parts of West allotted as part of the one twelfth of the province, among them a tract in Bethlehem township Hunterdon County on the Musconetcong creek which devised in his will to his son, Aaron.


Will and Probate

Marmaduke left a will dated 14 May 1746, in Chesterfield township Burlington county, and another dated 13 Aug 1746, mentioning son Aaron, wife Elizabeth, son Marmaduke and daughter Anne, wife of Joseph Curtis.[4] Probate was 24 Jul 1749. [4]


Research Notes

The will of Elizabeth (Pancoast) Watson's father spells out family relationships clearly: "children...Elizabeth (wife of Marmaduke Watson" and "son-in-law Marmaduke Watson".[1]
