George Berry Washington Jr was born a slave and rose from humble beginnings to become one of Crittenden County's largest landowners.

George Berry Washington Jr was born on December 25, 1864 in Arkansas.[1] His father was George Berry Washington Sr, and his mother Hannah (maiden name unknown). Born into slavery after the war, he was a freedman living in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.[2]

In 1870, he lived in District 5 of Fayette County, Tennessee near the Somerville post office.[3][4] His father has a farm in the county and he grew up working on the farm.[5]

He married Ella Roselle on May 25, 1883 in Arkansas.[6] They had at least three children, a daughter Elizabeth in 1886, a son Allen in 1888, and a daughter Irene in 1891. His wife died and he married Lula Wright on May 27, 1897 in Crittenten County, Arkansas.[7] In 1893, he purchased 40 acres of land for $200, and in 1898, he purchased another 70 acres where he also operated a cotton gin.[8]

He had another daughter, Arrener. In 1900, he lived in Tyronza, Crittenden County, Arkansas, where he farmed to earn a living.[9] By this time, he had increased his farm land to 176.43 acres.[8]

In 1910, he lived in Jackson Township, Crittenden County.[10] In 1920, he lived in Tyronza considered his main home.[11] By this time he had acquired over 518 acres of land with twelve other property he had mortgaged. It is estimated that he employed anywhere from 60 to 100 hands to work the farms, becoming one of the largest landowners in the county.
