Families of the Children of Samuel Washburn Jr. and Sarah Beach
  • From John Maltby:

Rev. Eli Washburn, born on 19 Sept. 1758 in Derby, [1] baptized on 21 Sept. 1758 in St. James’ Church, Derby, [2] possibly married Mary Fish, daughter of Darius and Sarah (Howard) Fish, of Canterbury, CT, [3] on 9 Mar. 1786 in Canterbury, CT, [4] and lived in Canterbury.

Eli Washburn, youngest son of Samuel Washburn Jr. served in the Revolutionary War from Derby. [5] Mary Fish was born on 6 Mar. 1766 in Canterbury, CT, [6] a granddaughter of John and Esther (Johnson) Fish, of Canterbury. [7]

Eli and Mary Washburn lived in Canterbury, Windham Co., CT, and they were living in Canterbury in the 1790, [8] and 1800 federal censuses, [9] but he was not a head of household in Canterbury in the 1810 federal census.

They apparently moved to Hanover, NH, by 1818, and on 21 Apr. 1818 Eli Washburn filed a pension application in Grafton Co., NH, stating that he had served for the Connecticut Line, and on 13 May 1820 at court in Haverhill, Grafton Co., NH, Eli Washburn swore by affidavit that he was aged 61 years, and a resident of Hanover, NH, that his wife was 54 years old, and he had two children still living at home. [10] He was living in Lebanon, Grafton Co., NH, in the 1830 federal census, [11] and an 81 year old Revolutionary War Pensioner living in the household of Cyrus Breck in Hanover, NH, in the 1840 federal census. [12] He died, “a soldier of the Revolution,” on 30 June 1849 in Hanover, Grafton Co., NH, aged 90 years, [13] per the Widow’s Revolutionary War Pension Application filed by Mary Washburn on 16 Nov. 1849. [14] and was buried at the Greensboro Cemetery in Hanover, Grafton Co, NH. [15] She was still living in Hanover, NH, in the 1850 federal census, with the family of her son-in-law, Cyrus Breck, [16] and she died a widow on 7 Jan. 1851 in Grafton Co., NH, aged 86 years, [17]

Eli Washburn and Mary Fish had children:

2401 i Dr. John6 Washburn, born on 13 Feb. 1787 in Canterbury, CT,[18] moved to New York, where he was a physician, and married Susan Phillips, daughter of Elijah and Susannah (Gates) Phillips, in say ca. 1814 in NY. She was born on 24 Feb. 1791 in NY,[19] and died on 22 Feb. 1825 in Parma, Monroe Co., NY.[20] He was living with the family of his daughter Mary and Lewis Peck in Sweden, Monroe Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a physician,[21] and he died on 22 Sept. 1853 in Parma, Monroe Co., NY, aged 67 years,[22] and they were both buried in Parma Corners Cemetery in Parma Corners, Monroe Co., NY, but no probate records were filed for his estate in Monroe Co., NY. They had children:

  • Mary Washburn, born on 24 Oct. 1789 in Canterbury, marriage not found.
  • (Probably another daughter born before 1790, who probably died by 1800.)

2404 iv Rev. Eli (6) Washburn (Jr.), born on 8 Dec. 1796 in Canterbury,[35] moved to Virginia, where he married Jane Mackey, daughter of Dr. Robert and Ann (Bradley) Mackey, in Halifax Co., VA.[36] She was born ca. 1798 in VA.[37] They moved to Perry Co., Tennessee, sometime before 1840, then to Henderson Co., TN, where he finally settled near Reagan, on Jack’s Creek, before 1850.[38] He was living in Dist. 12, Henderson Co., TN, in the 1860 federal census, where he was a farmer and Baptist Minister,[39] and they were still living in Henderson Co., TN, in the 1870 federal census.[40] He died on 13 Oct. 1875 in Henderson Co., TN, aged 78 years.[41] Jane (Mackey) Washburn was still living in Henderson Co., TN, in the 1880 federal census, with her widowed daughter-in-law Feldoria Washburn. They had children, order uncertain:

  • Eleanor Washburn, born ca. 1802 in CT, married Cyrus Breck/Buck, of Lebanon, NH, on 9 Jan. 1823 in Hanover, NH. She apparently died by 1860.
  • Almira F. Washburn, born ca. 1807, married Amos Dudley. She died on 6 Aug. 1887 in Hanover, NH.
