Biography

James Warren, the son of James Warren and Sarah Doty, was born April 14, 1700 in Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America. [1] [2] [3] James "was a distinguished and prominent citizen and a Justice of the Peace." [2] On December 27, 1723 he married Penelope Winslow. [4] [5] They had 5 children: James born 1726 and married Mercy Otis; Ann born 1728; Sarah, wife of William Sever, was born 1730; Winslow born 1733; and Josiah born 1736. [2] James died on July 2, 1757. [2] [3]

Probate

The will of James Warren of Plymouth was dated 31 May 1757 and proved on 19 July 1757 in Plymouth. He mentions his children, James Warren Jr., Ann Warren, and Sarah Sever.[6]

His inventory was taken on 1 September 1757 in Plymouth.[7]

In 1763, an account of his estate by James Warren was recorded which included debts received, debts paid, a pair of gravestones, and administration fees.[8]

In 1773, the Plymouth probate court was asked to divide the "13th great lot of cedar- swamp lying in Plympton" that his Capt James Warren had purchased, which after he died was passed on to James Warren, Esqr, now decd, and his seven sisters, viz., Sarah, Alice, Patience, hope, Mercy, Mary, and Elizabeth. James Warren, Esqr. afterward purchased his sister Mary's part. Three sisters (Hope, Mercy, and Betty) died intestate, whereupon James Warren, Esqr., decd., came into possession of their shares. So the land of the sister who died intestate was divided between their heirs, viz., the children of James Warren, Esqr. (James Warren Esqr., of Plymouth, and Sarah, wife of William Sever, Esqr of Kingston), to the heirs of Alice Ford, decd., the heirs of Sarah Sever, decd. (the heirs of Bethiah Tyler, decd.).[9]
