Biography

William was born in c1796 in Yorkshire, England, the son of George Ward (c1772-1847) and Margaret Onthand. His mother dies in 1806 and his father re-marries (Elizabeth Ann Barker) in 1807.

According to one source, he was christened in as a Wesleyan Methodist. This is of interest because most (or all?) of the Wards after they settled in Upper Canada were, or became, Primitive Methodisits.

Most of the family sails to Upper Canada sometime between 1821 and 1825 (the earlier date being more likely) and settles on Lot 7, Concession 7 in the new township of Toronto Gore.

William marries Ann Woodill (1799-1835) in Yorkshire (there are several interconnections between the Ward and Woodill families both in Yorkshire and in Toronto Gore) and they sail to Upper Canada presumably after the father, George Ward, had sailed. Their ship is blown off course and they end up in Baltimore, USA, where William works as a tailer and a farmer until, in 1830, he moves to Toronto Gore in Upper Canada. At some point, William moves on to the Township of Reach which no longer exists but was near the present day Lake Scugog.

Ann Woodill dies in childbirth in 1835 and at some point William re-marries. His second wife is Eliza Phillips and she, apparetnly, was from Toronto Gore Township.

Sources

[1] Ann Partridge from Michigan (a descendent of William) provided birth and death years. She says that William Ward died in Reach Township, Ontario (a township that no longer exists near Lake Scugog). She is also the source for the information about the ship being blown off course, the landing in Baltimore and the move to Toronto Gore in 1830. Another sources - http://boards.ancestry.ca/surnames. woodill/1.2.9.10.1/mb.ashx -- gives a birth year as 1797. The Byers Family Tree on MyHeritage, managed by Sharon Byers, shows William Ward (1796-1881) BUT has him marrying (1) Mary Wisby and (2) Eliza Phillips ?

[2] Information about William's second wife is from a family tree on MyHeritage – Hall web site, managed by Brenda Phillips.

[3] The information that he was Christened as a Wesleyan Methodist is from Pauline Franzen's family tree -- The Halls and the Wards of York County, ON. Canada found at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hall-ward&id=I2323
