Biography

William Ward, Surgeon of Fairfield

Birth

William's estimated birth is about 1631.[1] His parents Andrew Ward and Hester (Sherman) Ward are believed to have arrived from England about 1630, settling first in Watertown, Massachusetts.[2]

Marriage

William WARD and Deborah LOCKWOOD were married perhaps about 18 Oct 1656 when William purchased a house and four acres from Henry Lyon,[2] and before 20 Oct 1658.[1][3] Deborah LOCKWOOD, daughter of Robert LOCKWOOD, was born on 12 October 1636 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.[1] 20 October 1658 is sometimes seen as a marriage date. Torrey's New England Marriages says "ca 1656, by 20 Oct 1658" This "by" date frequently indicates the birth of the first child. However, where did this date come from? It is not in the Barbour Collection of Vital Records for Fairfield. It is not in the Connecticut Church Records Index for Fairfield. It does not appear in any located genealogies. Was it a transcription error on Torrey's part, that has since been repeated? Is it the date of some other known occurence?

After the death of William Ward, Deborah married (2) John Topping of Southampton, Long Island.[1]

Freeman

William Warde was made freeman 31 May 1657, by the General court of election in Connecticut.[4] He was propounded as a freeman of Connecticut again at court 14 May 1668, along with Andrew and Samuel and found on a list of 'Freeman from Fairfield' dated 10 Oct 1669. [5]

Death

Jan 10, 1675[/6], at the General Court of Connecticut, "The Councill allso appoynted Sarjt Wm. Warde to goe forth to New London to assist in the tending and dressing the wounded men there,..." This was part of the Colonies' King Philip's War against the Narragansett Indians.[5]

William died shortly. It is frequently mentioned that he died in the "Great Swamp Fight," but since this occured in December, before he was sent, that statement is untrue.

An inventory of the estate of Ensign William Ward was made 4 Mar 1675/6.[6][2] It was valued at £595. 11s. 93. His widow made oath.[2]

These are Middletown, Ct records which have an Ensign Wm Ward d. Mar. 28, 1690. It also has John Ward who wed Mary Harris April 1664. Their children include John, Andrew, Esther, William, Mary - birth dates are given. There are several Wards mentioned as well as Westchester Co. and Rowley, Mass.

This sounds like a line of this family.

Thank you Anne, I think the records are for Ward-14313, if you want to put the comment over there

Warde-114 and Ward-404 appear to represent the same person because: Warde-114 is unconnected

The new bio-check program is complaining that there is no 'Biography' at the top of the text.

The child John listed on the family search tree was not born until 1695, so is not possibly a son of this William, who was long since dead. As far as the daughters listed other than Hester, the others are not verified. I've not seen the Fairfield probate records, but if other daughters had been mentioned "Fam. of Old Fairfield" would have listed them.

I am sorry, I am not sure where the source is, but, many children are listed for William Ward, here on FamilySearch. Can these be verified? My line is supposed to go through William, but from a Child, John Ward.

MIchael, the page you cited doesn't list William at all. ? The only child listed by Jacobus in the Families of Old Fairfield is Hester/Esther who married Ephraim Hawley and others

I believe that there are several more children of this marriage, can anyone confirm this info:

I do not believe that Sarah is a daughter of this couple. Anyone object if I cut her loose?

There weren't any settlers at Watertown Connecticut in 1631. Where else could this birth have been? Watertown, Massachusetts?

Ward-404 and Ward-9458 appear to represent the same person because: Same name and wife. Lack of information on Ward-404.
