Note - Birthdate of Dec 7 1826 is stated in Canada 1901 Census. It is also on Find a Grave, which has no gravestone, so is not considered reliable. Profile was created with Peterhead as birth location, but that may have come from residence location when he married in 1852.
During the 1841 Census, George (error in birth date) is found working as a farm labourer in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire.[4]
During the 1851 census of Scotland 24-year-old George is living in St Fergus, in service as a farm labourer.[2][5] Note that a Margaret Gordon is also listed at same location.
George (~25) married Margaret Gordon (~18) 21 Apr 1852 in St Fergus, Banffshire, Scotland.[6][7] (Note: Kathy (Urbach) Nava purchased Marriage doc, which is a single entry in Marriage register in St Fergus on 21 Apr 1852. Transcription: 21st April 1852 - George Wallace and Margaret Gordon after due proclamation were married here this day .) St Fergus is where Margaret was born.
There is another marriage source, which is probably a marriage ban, that was dated 19 April 1852 in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[8][9] Transcription: April 19th - George Wallace, farm servant, in this parish and Margaret Gordon in St. Fergus. His residence was listed as Peterhead, Scotland and his occupation was listed as a farm servant.
According to the 1861 census, George and Margaret arrived in 1852 in Ontario, Canada[10][11]
There are two land transactions pertaining to George Wallace and his wife dated 1857. These appear to be for the purchase of 100 acres of land in Reach Township, namely the East Half of Lot 18, Concession 13. The sale was recorded as occurring on 27 Feb 1857. The second document appears to be the mortgage agreement for said property, dated 14 Feb 1857.[22] The mortgage is recorded as discharged in Instrument No. 20971, dated February 19th 1863. Discharge of the mortgage (from memorial #7742). [23] He later purchased the adjacent property described as Images 48-49, which record the transfer of land in Reach Township to George Wallace. It appears George Wallace was the highest bidder at $800 at an auction in Whitby for the purchase of foreclosed property, the north half of Lot # 19 in the 13th concession of Reach Township (adjacent to his existing land on Lot 18 of the 13th concession).[24]
In the 1861 census George (age 35), Farmer, was the head of household in Reach, Ontario, Canada West.[10]
In the 1871 census George (age 47), Farmer, was recorded as married in Reach, Ontario North, Ontario.[12]
An 1877 map of Reach shows the location of the Wallace farm, G. Reach, on concession XIII, lots 18 and 19, with altogether 150 acres.
In the 1881 census George (age 55), Farmer, was recorded as married in Reach, York, Ontario, Canada.[14]
In the 1891 census George (age 64), Farmer, was the married head of household in Reach, Ontaro South, Ontario, Canada.[25]
In the 1901 census George (age 74), Farmer, was the widowed father of Allan Wallace in Canada, Ontario.[1]
George died on 1 May 1905 in Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada at age 78.[26]
His will was probated in Ontario County court on May 17th 1905; the executors were sons Robert and William. Son Allan received the north half of Lot Number 19 in the 13th Concession of Reach Township.[28]
Research Notes
A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation stated that siblings Jessie (Wallace) Gray (1822-1911), George Wallace (1826-1905), Christian / Christina (Wallace) Rennie (abt.1832-1912), and Bethia all immigrated from Aberdeen to Ontario in 1852. It also stated that George was born 1826, immigrated to Canada after his marriage to Margaret Gordon in 1852 in S Ednie, St Fergus parish. Some of his siblings immigrated from New Deer, Aberdeen,[3] which George listed as his birth location in the Scotland Census.
George is listed in 1841, age 15, and 1851 census, age 25, as born in New Deer, working, and no other family members are listed with him.
No census has been found with the other children, nor parents George or Christian, so the parents may have died before 1841.
The parents were married in New Deer in 1821
no birth source has been found for George or any of his siblings, probably because the did not worship in the Established Church (of Scotland). All the siblings at one time or another declared themselves as belonging to the Free Church in census records. An 1847 Gazetteer of Scotland noted that a census made by the parish-elders of New Deer at the end of 1835 found that more than 600 of the inhabitants did not worship in the Established Church. There were at least two Secession Congregations with several meeting houses as well as an Associate Burgher Presbyterian Church. No records survive for any of these for the time period in question.
For the years 1826 and 1827 there are no baptisms of any George Wallace recorded for all of Aberdeenshire on Scotlands People.
Amy (Crawford) Gilpin, Project Leader of Scotland, has spent time researching George with the following conclusion:[29]
What we can conclude
George's birth location is recorded as New Deer, in 1826, according to the 1851 Census of Scotland.[2]
As he appears to be on his own at a young age, it is possible that his parents died when he was very young. There is no documentation to prove this one way or the other yet.
ScotlandsPeople has two marriage documents for George and Margaret. By purchasing the actual documents, it is clear they pertain to the same couple and indicate that Banns were read in Peterhead parish and the marriage occurred a few days later, in St. Fergus. Digital copies of the documents are in the possession of Kathy (Urbach-13). Due to copyright requirements they cannot be added to the profile.

What we don't know
When he and his wife emigrated to Canada West. We can be certain that it was after their marriage at St. Fergus in 1852, and before the purchase of their farm in Reach Township, in 1857. [22] Census documents record the year as 1852, but no other immigration information has been found yet.[11]
His FamilySearch profile provides information indicating that the birth record for the George Wallace born at St Fergus, Banffshire dated 14 March 1825 is the correct one. How do we know this? No documents have been found to support a birth location.
Who his parents were
Parents ruled out
John Wallace and his wife Agnes can be ruled out as parents of this George, as they have a son, age 3 (in 1851) named George.[30][31]
Susan Wallace (a widow) is a possibility for George's mother, however she's living alone at the time of the 1851 Census.[33]
George Wallace and his wife Jean are also good candidates as parents of this George. In 1841, he would have been 15 and an acceptable age to have left home for work. He is not in the census with them. [34]
George (error in birth date) is found in the 1841 Census working as a farm labourer in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire.[4]

The 1901 census is not the only place George's date of birth is listed as December 7, 1826. I have access to one of the three copies of his family Bible, and it has the same date of birth written down. Not sure if that counts as very solid evidence, but it would be pretty odd if he was wrong about his own birthday. I also have a picture of that page in the Bible if anyone is interested:)
As a decedent of George Wallace and the poser of the question as to his birth date and parents, I thank all contributors to this biography . I am satisfied that it correctly identifies my great grandfather's birth date as 1826, his place of birth and the names of his parents. I apologize for suggesting the 1825 birthdate. This was based on my review of 1825 baptism records which appeared to support this date when no birth records could be found confirming the 1826 date.
I found a piece of information that may link George to parents George Wallace and Christian Alexander! A Christina Wallace, daughter of George Wallace and Christian Alexander, born around 1835 in Scotland, married Charles Rennie in Ontario in 1861. At the time of the marriage, Christina was living in Brock, but her spouse was living in Reach!!! Christian (Wallace) Rennie (abt.1835-) I think this Christina Wallace was George Wallace's sister.
And she died in 1912 on Lot 18, concession 13 in Reach, George's farm.!
Amy, Project Leader, has been researching this person in both Canada and Scotland, as well as possible parents and all census. 1841 and 1851 possible / probably census are included in the biography. There is some info in the Research Notes about Amy's research, as well as a link to the Space Page she create with more information. She ruled out Robert as parent because there are multiple sources with New Deer as his birthplace, and Robert's son's birth source does not state New Deer.
1841 and 1851 census, which you also found, states he was born in New Deer, not St Fergus. If you look at the map that Amy made, you can see where St Fergus is, vs New Deer and Old Deer. The County / District may have changed, not the town. Their marriage was in St Fergus, not New Deer, as the census state was where he was born.
