Margaret (Walker) Ford is a part of US Black heritage.
Margaret Walker was born in April 1839 in England, daughter of James Walker and Hannah. She emigrated to the United States in 1848 or 1849 according to census records.[1][2] Her first husband was George Guthrie. They were the parents of five daughters:
Some researchers have supported the notion that her mother was Hannah Crosley. This is based on marriage banns between James Walker and Hannah Crosley 13 September 1835.[3] However, when you look closely at the record, it is clear the husband in question is James Walker Pell. The marriage date was 12 June 1836.[4]
Also proposed as the mother of Margaret is Hannah Thompson. She married James Walker 21 May 1825 in Bedale, Yorkshire, England.[5] This is also an unlikely alliance given that James Walker was enslaved. The Emancipation Declaration wasn't proclaimed until 1 August 1834, meaning in all likelihood, James was still enslaved in Jamaica and not in Yorkshire until after this date.[6]
