Biography

Lillian (Guthrie) Palmer is a part of US Black heritage.

Lillian Martha Guthrie was born on 29 September 1870 in Hopkinton, St. Lawrence, New York, United States, daughter of George K. Guthrie and Margaret Walker.^[1] When she was young, she used the name of her step-father, Ford. According to her Social Security record, she was born in 1872, but 1870 matches better with the census records.^[1] She married Michael Roddy 17 August 1901 at Tupper Lake, Franklin County, New York.^[2] He died in 1918, but they were probably divorced since she was married to B. F. Smith 19 May 1905 at St. Regis Falls, New York.^[3] After this marriage, she married Alfred Azro Palmer before the time of the 1915 New York State census.^[4] The 1920 US census shows her as a widow and using the name Lillian M. Guthrie.^[5] Her husband probably died before 1925 when she was living with her only known child, Edwin J. Guthrie in Tully, Onondaga County, New York, but he certainly died before the 1930 US census when she was listed as a widow.^[6] In 1935, she was living in St. Regis Falls, New York and in Massena, St. Lawrence County, New York in 1940.^[7] She was again living with Edwin in 1950.^[8]

Lillian died at age 80 on 17 October 1951 in Canajoharie, New York.^[9]
