Charles was born at Bermondsey in Surrey on the 28th of October 1666. He was the son of Charles Wager and Prudence Goodson.[1]
Charles was apprenticed to a Quaker merchant captain, John Hull of Barnstable, Massachusetts.[2] In 1689 he was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.[2]
Charles had a successful naval career, becoming a rear-Admiral in 1707.[2] He was knighted on the 8th of December 1709 for his services in taking the galleons in the West Indies. [3]
Charles was Member of Parliament five times, representing:
In 1733 Charles was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty.[2] In December 1742 he was made Treasurer of the Navy.[2]
On the 8th of December 1691 Charles married Martha Earning (1664-1748), daughter of Anthony Earning, who was a naval captain under the Commonwealth. They had no children.[2] He passed away in 1743.
