Samuel Hynes Vick was an educator, politician, businessman, real estate developer, church leader.

Samuel Hynes Vick was born in 1861[1] or 1863,[2][3][4][5][6] likely enslaved, in Nash County, North Carolina, United States.[6] There were several Vick slaveholders in Nash County. According to a bio on Black Wide-Awake, he was born at Castalia.[7]

His parents were Daniel Vick and Fannie (Blount) Vick (daughter of Violet Blount).[8][9] In the 1870 census Samuel (age 8) was in Wilson, Wilson, North Carolina.[9] In the 1880 census Samuel (age 16), At School, was the son of Daniel Vick in Wilson, Wilson, North Carolina, United States.[10]

He graduated from Lincoln University in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1884.[6](More in See Also, below)

Samuel (age 29), son of Daniel Vick & Fannie Vick, married Annie M Washington on 19 May 1892 in Wilson, North Carolina, United States.[2][11] Their children were born in Wilson, North Carolina.

  1. Elma Vick b. Apr 1893[3][4]
  2. Daniel L. Vick b. Feb 1897[3][4]
  3. Samuel W. Vick b. 1900[12]
  4. George Vick b. 1903[4]
  5. Anna Vick b. 1905[4]
  6. Robert Vick b. 1908[4]
  7. Monte L. (Vick) Cowan b. 1918[12]

Samuel was a member of the Wilson County, North Carolina, school board from 1896 to 1898. He was also a former president of the Wilson Commercial Bank.[6]

He served as postmaster in Wilson for quite a few years, from 1889 to 1904.[6]

In the 1900 census Samuel (age 37), Post Master, was the married head of household in Wilson, Wilson, North Carolina.[3] He and Annie had two children in the home.[3] Also with them was a cousin, fifteen-year-old Bessie Parker.[3]

In the 1910 census Samuel (age 47), Dealer in Real Estate, was the married head of household in Wilson Ward 3, Wilson, North Carolina, United States.[4]

Samuel and his wife sold a quarter acre lot for $150 in 1911 to R. G. Briggs and C. M. Fleming. [13]

In the 1930 census Hines (age 62), a dealer in real estate, was the married head of household at 622 East Green St, Wilson, Wilson, North Carolina, United States.[12] He owned his home, valued at $4,000. His children Samuel and Monte were in the home.

In the 1940 census Sam (age 77) was the married head of household in Wilson, Wilson, North Carolina.[5]

Samuel, son of Daniel Vick & Fannie Blunt, died on 8 July 1946 (age 83) at his home in Wilson, Wilson, North Carolina, United States. His funeral was held at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, and he was buried in Rountree Vick Cemetery, both in Wilson. [8][6]

Research Notes

  • Need to look at the Vick slaveholders in Nash County. One source located is the Nash County, NCGenWeb.[14]
  • Then look through probate records and inventories for each. We would be looking for the father, Daniel Vick.
  • Samuel Vick, born in 1863 and died in 1946, would make his age was 83 or close to it. There may be a discrepancy in his handwritten death record. It appears he self-reported 1863 (or corresponding age) several times during his lifetime. This may be the year he believed he was born.
  • Further research is needed to see if a month and day of his birth can be located. FG has a date of 1 April 1863, but no photo of a memorial, and it appears this information was not recorded in his death record.
