Richard was the son and heir of Warin de Vernon of Shipbrook, Cheshire, and Maud daughter of Reginald de Balliol. He had sons, Warin (who succeeded to the Barony of Shipbrook), Ralph, William (who succeeded to the manor of Haddon), Robert and Richard.[1]
Richard de Vernon of Harlaston, Staffordshire, was in favour with the future King John, who appointed him Sheriff of Lancaster in 1189, a position he held until John's rebellion in 1194, when his land at Harlaston was taken into King Richard's hands. His lands were restored on John's accession to the throne in 1199, and he again served as Sheriff of Lancaster from 1200 to 1205 (his son William deputising during his last six months in office).[2]
Sir Richard de Vernon had inherited Haddon Hall, Derbyshire, in right of his wife Avice daughter of William Avenel, by about 1192, when he was granted a licence by John, then Count of Mortain, during his brother Richard I's absence in the Holy Land, to strengthen the fortifications of the hall. He was living in 16 John (1214-5), but dead before 3 Henry III (1218-9).[3]
