Biography

Maud was born in about 1225 probably in Gilsland, Cumberland, England. She was the daughter and only surviving heir of Hubert de Vaux and Aline (Burgh) de Vaux [1]

It is recorded that she married Thomas de Multon in about 1235. [2] [3] Her father died in about 1240, and her husband Thomas therefore inherited the title of Baron of Irthington, which by this stage had become known as the Barony of Gilsland. [3]

They had at least three children of whom Thomas, James and Hubert are mentioned in a writ of 28 May 1293 disposing of various properties after her death. [3]

Her husband Thomas died in 1270 [4]

Her death is recorded in the Lanercost, Cumberland, England Chronicle as having happened on St Dunstan's feast day (May 19) probably in 1293 at Irthington, Cumberland. [3]

Note

The name Vaux or de Vaux comes from the Norman French for flowing waters or valleys. There may well be more than one Valley from which different persons of that name may have originated. Matilda and De Vallibus are the medieval Latin for her names.

Research Note

The family tree shown on the Burgh by Sands record [5] suggests that the two Thomases in the next generation shown on this profile are cousins.

Richardson under BREWES says the Hubert who was father of Aline was of Surlingham Norfolk, and Denham Suffolk. Blomefield discusses this family. Maud's father seems to have been John, not Thomas. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-hist-norfolk/vol5/pp462-470
