Gilles van der Wall, the son of Hendrik van der Wall and Jansje Hendrika Mooi was born at Arnhem, Holland 1829 (calculated from age on death notice by Gladwin-7)

Gilles moved with his parents to the USA. He was qualified as a minister in the American Reformed Church by 1856. Gilles done his training at New Bunswick College, N.Y. He held a congregation at area of Millstone church for three years, he became a professor of languages at Hope College in Michigan. After his death, the community at East Millstone church, New York, erected a plaque in remembrance of Gilles van der Wall, where he was originally Ordained as Minister. [2]
On a visit to Holland during 1860, where he also met up with Pastor William Robertson, Pastor Gilles heard of vacancies in the N.G.Kerk in Cape Colony. Gilles, and his brother in law Rev. H. van Broekhuizen, decided to take up the offer, leaving Boston in the USA in 1861. Gilles arrived at the Cape Colony with his wife & five children.: Johanna, Rilce, Johan, Maria.
He accepted a post in Bloemfontein, Orange River Colony in 1862, (Twee Toring Kerk) and moved with his family. Remembering that Bloemfontein was in Orange River Colony, one can see that politics in the church. An Autonomous body was initiated by Gilles vd Wall, and was formed in 1865. Gilles vd Wall was the 1st moderator of the newly formed Nederduitsche Gereformeerde Kerk in 1865. Pastor Gilles van der Wall served in Bloemfontein until May 1870, then moved to Paarl, for a few years, succeeding Pastor van der Lingen. His successor in Bloemfontein is Rev. G.W.A. van der Lingen. Soon hereafter Pastor Gilles van der Wall was sent to Cape Town where her preached the gospel from Acts 9: 20. He was only here for 1 year, then back to Paarl Gilles vd Wall was recognized as an influential figure in the church , clergyman, and politics. His leadership earned him respect from the public, & Pres. Brand. So Gilles was a member of the deputation sent to London in 1868 to prevent the annexation of Basutoland. Gilles van der Wall was a minister briefly 1875-1876 in Paarl, yet he worked for Sinode of the church till 1895. During this period he was a moderator, and assessor ....[3] [4]
His 1st wife Gertruida van Broekhuizen, whom he married at Arnhem, Holland. Gertruida travelled with Gilles into the USA to preach the gospel had died in 1892, Here she gave him 5 children.(immigration record 1860 seen by Gladwin-7 shows 4 children.) Gertruida van der Wall died 1/6/1892 at Kroonstad, Orange River Colony.
Gilles married the Widow of W.H Auret....Elizabeth Anne Eleanor Pritchard during 1892. She survived Gilles, to pass away in 1916. They were married for around 4 years..[5]
Gilles van der Wall passed on in January 2/01/1896 at the Paarl, and was survived by Elizabeth Anne Eleanor Pritchard. [6]
Gilles had accompanied his father Hendrik van der Wall, also a Pastor in the Christian Reformed Church in Netherlands, to the USA, with wife, Jansje, due to the hostile attitude of the Reformed Church of Holland towards their church in Holland.
