Biography

Quash was born about 1787 in Africa.

He was brought to the United States as an enslaved man. At one time, he was owned by Theodore Randell of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Quash escaped from slavery and his owner placed the following advertisement. The advertisement was dated May, 1817, but was continued to run in August 1817, suggesting that Quash eluded capture for several months at least:

“RANAWAY…(obscured) [Planta]tion on Sunday (obscured) Tuesday last, an African fellow named QUASH. He is five feet six inches high, slender maue {sic} and speaks very broken; he is about thirty years of age, and has marks on his cheeks, which we frequently observe on persons of his nation. The above reward will be paid to any person or persons, who will deliver the said fellow to the subscriber, or will have him secured in any goal in this state. THEODORE RANDELL, May 31st, 1817.” [1]

Quash passed away after 1817.
