Biography

Edward Underwood is Notable.

Edward Underwood was an American physician and civil rights leader.

Edward Ellsworth Underwood was born in 1864. He was the son of Johnson Underwood and Harriet Clanton.^[1]In 1870, Edward (6) was the youngest of four children (1 girl and 3 boys) in the home of Johnson and Harriet Ellsworth in Mount Pleasant in Jefferson County, Ohio, where his father was a minister.^[2] In 1880, Edward (15) was the youngest of three sons in the home of Johnson and Harriet Ellsworth in Mt Pleasant in Jefferson County, Ohio.^[3]

Edward E and his older brother Robert were the first African Americans to graduate from the Mount Pleasant High School in Jefferson County, Ohio.

He became the principal of the African American school in Emerson. After seven years teaching there he became a Methodist minister and then he moved to Cleveland and attended the Western Reserve Medical College and graduated as a physician and surgeon. In 1881, he moved to Frankfort, Kentucky, where he practiced medicine and was an active advocate for the civil rights of African-Americans, first to organize a Frankfort chapter of the NAACP, and editor of the newspaper "Bluegrass Bugle."^[4]

He was the husband of Sarah Walker Underwood. According to Census records they were married about 1896 and in 1900 Edward and Sarah were living on Mero Street in Frankfort, Kentucky with their two sons, Elsworth (3) and Rob't (6).^[5] The couple would remain in the home at 310 Mero Street until their deaths.^[6][7][8][9]

He died in 1942. He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Walker. The informant was Mrs M E Ellis of Frankfort. He was buried in Frankfort on May 31, 1942.^[1][10]
