In 1912 he was a domestic gardener when he joined the Royal Navy (J9052) on 13 Sep 1912 as a Boy 2nd class for 12 years. He served in the Royal Navy during WW1, rising to Petty Officer (Telegraphist) before joining the Royal Australian Navy in 1920. He sailed from England for Australia on the SS "Friedrickruhe" on about 10 Jan 1920.[1]
He was discharged from the RAN at his own request in 1939.
He died in Elwood VIC in 1945.
