Biography

Family

The Trounson family was based in St Allen and Newlyn East, Cornwall. Elizabeth's parents, James Trounsen and Elizabeth Kittow, daughter of Thomas Kittow, were married on 02 Jan 1714 (1713, O.S.; 1714, N.S.) in St. Allen, Cornwall.[1]

Birth

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
Elizabeth (Trounson) Trebilcock was born in St Allen, Cornwall, England.

Elizabeth was born c.1718 (1717, O.S.; 1718, N.S.) to James Trounson and Elizabeth Kittow, and was christened on 10 Mar 1718 (1717, O.S.; 1718, N.S.) in St. Allen, Cornwall.[2]

Siblings

Elizabeth was one of four children born to James and Elizabeth:

  1. John Trounson, christened on 18 Oct 1714 in St. Allen, Cornwall.[3]
  2. Elizabeth Trounson, christened on 10 Mar 1718 (1717, O.S.; 1718, N.S.) in St. Allen, Cornwall.[2]
  3. Mary Trounson, christened on 13 Nov 1720, died on 12 Jun 1794 in St. Allen, Cornwall.[4]
  4. James Trounson, christened on 19 Jul 1724 in St. Allen, Cornwall.[5]

Marriage

She married Marmaduke Trebilcock of St Newlyn East on 01 Jan 1742 (1741 O.S.; 1742, N.S.) in St Newlyn East, Cornwall.[6]

Research Notes

There are three copies of transcriptions of a marriage between Marmaduke Trebilcock and an Elizabeth Trounson available on OPC Cornwall:

  • The first is dated 01 Jan 1736 (1736, O.S.; 1737, N.S.) in Newlyn East, for Marmaduke Trebilcock and Eliz. Townson.[7]This transcription cites Bodmin BTs as its source; however, the Phillimore's copy of Bodmin marriages has no record at all of a marriage between a Marmaduke Trebilcock and an Elizabeth Trownson/Townson between 1736 and 1741, see Cornwall Parish Registers, Bodmin Marriages 1732-1738, pp 56-57 and see Cornwall Parish Registers, Bodmin Marriages 1739-1748, pp. 58-59, both hosted on FamilySearch.org. It is possible the original copy of the Bodmin Bishops Transcripts has the entry in it, but the transcribed does not. Marmaduke would've been 22 at the time of marriage, and Elizabeth 19, which is rather young for the period, but not unlikely.
  • The second is dated 01 Jan 1741 (1741 O.S.; 1742, N.S.) in Newlyn East, for Marmaduke Trebilcock and Eliz Trounson.[8] This record states that it is sourced from Phillimore's for Newlyn in Pydar. No image has been found on FS to confirm, however there is the above-cited link to an indexed transcription of the marriage, with no image attached at FamilySearch.org.
  • The third record is dated 01 Jan 1741 (1741, O.S.; 1742, N.S.) in Newlyn East, for Marmaduke Trebilcock and Eliz Trounson.[9] This record has no annotation of sourcing on it. The 1741 (O.S.) records would put Marmaduke at 27 and Elizabeth at 24, which are much more reasonable ages for a first marriage than the younger set.

With the preponderance of records reading at 1741, as well as the age range that the couple would've been at that marriage, I am comfortable setting 1741 as the correct date of marriage. Without images of the original register, there is no way to confirm the error of 1736. However, no children have been identified for Marmaduke prior to 1742, and the first child to be born to the couple is a Marmaduke: the namesake child of his father. S. Grimaldi 14 May 2021.

Children

They had eight children - five sons and three daughters - together, of whom seven survived to adulthood. All of the children save Elizabeth were christened in St Newlyn East; Elizabeth was christened in Madron. Her christening record makes no mention of her mother's name (the Madron records for that decade do not include the mother's names), but there is no mention of her as a base born child, either. Additionally, there are only records for one Marmaduke Treblicock of age in the region who could have fathered her.

  1. Marmaduke Trebilcock, christened on
  2. Nicholas Trebilcock, christened on
  3. Elizabeth Trebilcock, christened on
  4. John Trebilcock, christened on
  5. William Trebilcock (twin), christened on
  6. Mary Trebilcock (twin), christened on
  7. Jane Trebilcock, christened on
  8. John Trebilcock, christened on
  9. Ann Trebilcock, christened on
