Mary Alice Trent was born January 6, 1857 in Prairie Township, Missouri, just northeast of Salisbury.[1] She was the first daughter born to Thomas H Trent (abt.1820-abt.1879) and Rebecah M (Wood) Trent (abt.1827-abt.1880).
When she was three years old Alice lived with her family in Prairie Township where her father was a farmer. They lived very close to her aunt and uncle Ellen (Wood) Trent and Jacob W Trent and her maternal grandmother who lived with Ellen and Jacob.[2] In 1870 the family was listed as living in Salisbury Township in Chariton County. Alice was living with her parents, six siblings and one servant girl. She and three other siblings attended school.[3] They had not moved, but the name of the township had changed in 1867.[4]
On May 18, 1876 Mary Alice (19) married John Francis Porter (1838-1922)(39) in Chariton County. They were both living in that county at the time.[5][6]
By 1880 Alice and John had had three children, although their oldest child Newland Porter (1877-bef.1880) had died before the 1880 census was taken.[7] The census showed that John was selling sewing machines while Alice kept the house. They had two young daughters, Beulah (although incorrectly enumerated as Beavil) aged 2 and Vernie (incorrectly listed as a son) aged ten months.[8]
Four more children were born to Mary Alice following that 1880 census: Euryclea Porter in early 1881, Pearly Gate Porter in mid 1882, Capitola (Porter) Rand in 1885 and Carl H. D. Porter in 1887. Pearly Gate was born in Lamar, Missouri and died the following year of typho malarial fever in that same location therefore the family was living in Lamar, Barton County at that time.[9] Although the death record of daughter Capitola (Porter) Rand states she was born in West Plains, she must have been born in Mansfield as the family was living there between 1883 and 1898. [10][11] Euryclea died in Mansfield, Missouri on May 6, 1891.[12] According to Mary Alice's granddaughter Mary Francis (Jackson) Follett the family lived near Laura Elizabeth (Ingalls) Wilder (1867-1957) in Mansfield and Rose (Wilder) Lane (1886-1968) was a playmate of the Porter children, likely Euryclea.[13] Son Carl H. D. Porter must have been born in Mansfield as this is where the family was living in 1887.
In 1900 the Porter family was renting a house in West Plains. John and their two oldest daughters Beulah and Vern were working in a dry goods shop. Capitola and Carl were attending school.[14]
Mary Alice's daughters left the family home when they married, Beulah in 1900, Capitola in 1906 and Vern in 1907. Carl died suddenly of typhoid in 1904. This left just Mary Alice and John in the home in 1910. John was no longer able to work so the couple lived off of savings in their rental home at 109 Missouri Avenue in West Plains. The home was owned by the Hill family who also lived at that address.[15] Mary Alice cared for John.[11] In 1915 Mary Alice and John spent the winter in Kansas City with their daughter Capitola and her husband.[16] By 1920 Mary Alice and John had purchased their home at 109 Missouri Avenue. John was not working and Mary Alice was caring for him. They lived next door to new neighbours, their daughter Vern's brother-in-law, Andrew Jackson.[17]
May 6, 1922 John Porter died, leaving Mary Alice widowed.[11] After John's death their daughter Beulah who had been widowed in 1919 moved to West Plains to be with her mother. At the end of 1923 Beulah married a West Plains druggist, Ed Bohrer, and Mary Alice moved into the Bohrer home on West 2nd Street[18] along with Beulah. However, in 1927 Beulah became very ill and then Mary Alice became ill in 1928. Mary Alice's other daughters Vern and Capitola spent much time in West Plains nursing them. Finally in 1929 Beulah passed away on October 12.[19]
Upon the death of Beulah, Mary Alice moved to Oconomowoc with her daughter Vern and Vern's two children Charles and Mary Francis. Mary Francis remembers her grandmother as a very strict woman who was particular about dressing for dinner and that children should be seen and not heard. Her grandmother did not feel a bed was made properly unless it was tight enough to bounce a ball upon. Also, her grandmother did not allow her to play with the only other children in the neighbourhood because of their skin color.[20][21]
On April 20, 1930 Mary Alice Porter died at the age of 73 in Oconomowoc. Her daughter Vern brought her body back to West Plains, Missouri to be buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery next to her husband, son, and daughter.[22][23]
