Biography

An Elizabeth Toy of Constantine[1] married a James Caddy of Wendron[2] in Constantine on 31 December 1804.[3][4] Elizabeth's parentage is not yet definitely known.

Evidence based on the signatures appearing on the marriage record strongly suggests that the groom James Caddy was the son of William and Alice baptized in Wendron on 14 September 1783.[5] See James Caddy's profile for further details.

James Caddy and Elizabeth Toy had two children: Alice Caddy, daughter of James and Elizabeth, was baptized in Wendron on 10 July 1805,[6] and Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of James and Elizabeth, was baptized in Wendron on 30 November 1806.[7]

James Caddy, aged 22, was buried in Wendron on 12 May 1806.[8] Observe that the second child was born after James's death.

It looks as though the first daughter was named after James Caddy's mother, Alice (Pryor) Caddy, and the second daughter was named after Elizabeth herself. Had the second child been a boy, he would surely have been called James.

Since James Caddy was only 20 years old at the time of his marriage, it is perhaps natural to guess that his bride was also relatively young. At first sight the most obvious candidate is the Elizabeth Toy, daughter of Peter and Christian, who was baptized in Wendron on 25 December 1785.[9] But there is compelling evidence that this Elizabeth Toy in fact married Bennet Perry in Wendron on 10 November 1806.[10]

It is also difficult to find out what became of Elizabeth after her husband's death. Since she was surely still a young woman when he died, there is every likelihood that she remarried. And since there seem to be no burial records from Wendron or nearby for an Elizabeth Caddy of roughly the right age, It does indeed seem highly probable that she remarried.

Second marriage

We can attempt to identify Elizabeth's second husband by making lists of the Elizabeth Caddy marriages near Wendron or Constantine at about the right time and the women named Elizabeth Caddy who were living there, and trying to match up the lists. The evidence is not likely to be conclusive.

An Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of William and Allice, was baptized in Wendron on 27 April 1766.[11] It is likely that she married William Richards in Wendron on 9 August 1794[12] and was buried in Wendron on 16 March 1806, aged 40.[13] See her father's profile.

Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of William Caddy and Mary Seccombe was baptized in Mullion[14] on 10 February 1773, married John Hayward in St Clement[15] on 30 October 1812 and died in Devonport on 19 January 1855, aged 82. See her profile for the sources of this information.

An Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of Robert and Elanor, was baptized in Sithney[16] on 5 March 1775.[17] It is likely that she married Walter Warren in Wendron on 1 July 1805,[18] had a daughter named after her mother baptized on 6 October 1805,[19] and was buried on 6 September 1835, age recorded as 59.[20]

An Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of John and Christian, was baptized in St Hilary[21] on 26 December 1785.[22] She had a sister named Catherine, who was baptized on 31 March 1793.[23] Elizabeth married John Williams in St Hilary on 14 February 1818.[24] John and Elizabeth Williams had a daughter Elizabeth baptized in St Hilary on 28 September 1823, and Catherine Caddy had an illegitimate son John baptized on the same day. Bizarrely, Catherine's child was fathered by Elizabeth's husband.[25]

An Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of Henry and Anne, was baptized in Wendron on 6 August 1780.[26]

An Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of Richard and Prudence, was baptized in Wendron on 30 October 1785.[27]

An Elizabeth Caddy, daughter of Humphry and Mary, was baptized in Gunwalloe[28] on 5 August 1787.[29]

Looking now for marriages, we find that an Elizabeth Caddy and a John Pappin, both of Helston Borough,[30] were married in Helston on 8 May 1808,[31] an Elizabeth Caddy of Constantine married a Henry Carne of Wendron in Helston on 7 October 1808,[32] and an Elizabeth Caddy and a Thomas Combellack, both of Wendron, were married in Wendron on 25 April 1818.[33]

Based on the fact that Henry and Elizabeth Carne had a daughter named Prudence (baptized on 8 August 1811)[34] it is reasonable to guess that Henry Carne's wife was the daughter of Richard and Prudence. Elizabeth Carne was buried on 25 April 1861, her age recorded as 73.[35] By our theory she was actually 75.

Elizabeth Pappin, widow of John, was buried in Helston on 4 April 1872, her age recorded as 87.[36]

It is likely that the Elizabeth Caddy who married Thomas Combellack in 1818 was the 45 year old Elizabeth Combellack of Constantine who was buried in Wendron on 28 June 1831.[37]

So it looks as though John Pappin's wife and Thomas Combellack's wife were both born in about 1785, making it reasonable to conjecture that one was James Caddy's widow and the other the daughter of Humphry and Mary Caddy.

The daughter of Henry and Ann baptized in 1780, if she survived infancy, would have been a few years older than the other two. What became of her is not known.

The Helston marriage record for John Pappin and Elizabeth Caddy says that Elizabeth was "of this Borough", and in fact census records from 1851, 1861 and 1871 all say that she was born in Helston.[38][39][40] Nevertheless, we suggest that she may have been born in Gunwalloe and moved to Helston while still a child. It seems likely that her father was the Humphry Caddy buried in Gunwalloe on 8 September 1797,[41] and her mother was the Mary Caddy buried in Gunwalloe on 7 January 1793,[42] which was also the day on which her youngest brother was baptized.[43]

The marriage record for Thomas Combellack and Elizabeth Caddy says that Elizabeth was of Wendron parish, which certainly fits with our conjecture that this Elizabeth was the widow of James Caddy. In view of the burial record mentioned above, it seems likely that she was born in about 1785 or 1786, and was thus about 18 or 19 at the time of her marriage.

Second family

Thomas and Elizabeth Combellack had daughters named Mary, Ann, Grace and Alice, and a son named Thomas. The daughters were all baptized at the Helston Wesleyan Methodist chapel, but no baptism record has been found for the son.

Mary was born on 3 November 1818 and baptized on 24 November 1818,[44] Ann was born on 26 September 1821 and baptized on 14 October 1821,[45] Grace was born on 14 February 1824 and baptized on 19 April 1824,[46] and Alice was born on 13 June 1828 and baptized on 30 June 1828.[47] The first of these records says that Thomas was a yeoman living in Wendron, the others say that he was a miner living in Constantine.

It seems likely that the youngest child, Alice, was so named in honour of Elizabeth's first born child, Alice (Caddy) Gill, who had died in 1826 at the age of 20.[48]

The daughter Mary was probably the 18 year old Mary Combellack of Nanjarrow who was buried in Constantine on 6 October 1836,[49] and the daughter Alice was probably the infant Alice Combellack of Constantine who was buried in Wendron on 26 September 1829.[50] The daughter Ann was the Ann Combellack, daughter of Thomas, who married John Peters in Wendron on 24 September 1844.[51] The daughter Grace remained unmarried, though census records show that she did have children.[52][53][54] She was buried in Cury[55] on 17 September 1898.[56]

An 1841 census record shows a 63 year old miner named Thomas Combellack living at Seworgan Stamps in Constantine with children named Thomas (aged 14), Ann (aged 16) and Grace (aged 15).[57][58] It does seem likely that the elder Thomas was the father of these children, and the fact that the mother was missing adds weight to our claim that Elizabeth died in 1831.

The ages of Ann and Grace as given in the 1841 census record are wrong: Ann would have been 19 and Grace 17. But their brother probably really was 14; this would mean that he was born roughly in the middle of the four year gap between Grace and Alice.

Thomas Combellack of Seworgan, aged 67, was buried in Constantine on 25 March 1844. So the Thomas Combellack who witnessed the marriage of Ann Combellack to John Peters in September 1844 was not her father, but presumably was her brother. He married Mercy Treloar in Wendron on 17 February 1848.[59] Note that the signature of the Thomas who witnessed Ann's marriage is a decent enough match for the signature of the Thomas who married Mercy.

Ann's husband was the John Peters, son of John and Ann, who was baptized in Germoe[60] on 2 May 1824.[61] Thus he was about three years younger than Ann, which may explain why she understated her age at the time of her marriage.

By the time of the 1851 census John and Ann had moved to Liskeard,[62] and had four children. On this occasion Ann's age was overstated by three years.[63]

The Peters family emigrated in 1854, and arrived in New York on 16 August of that year as passengers on the ship Sheridan.  Ann's age was overstated by two years.[64]

It would seem that Ann Peters overstatd her age by a couple of years for the rest of her life, for when she died, on 7 May 1903, her age was recorded as 85. But the death record confirms that her father's name was Thomas Combellack and her mother's name was Elizabeth. The record in fact purports to give Elizabeth's maiden surname, though the writing is hard to decipher.[65] FamilySearch have transcribed the name as "Hul",[66] but a death certificate (available on Ancestry.com) has it clearly as "Hill".[67]

It is worth noting that although the death certificate says that Ann Peters was 85 years old when she died, it also says that she was 23 years old when she was first married, which is consistent with our claims that she was born in 1821 and married in 1844.

It is entirely unsurprising that the informant for the death certificate either did not know or misremembered the maiden surname of the mother of the aged deceased Ann Peters. The Cornish records cited above indicate that Ann was born on 26 September 1821, and was the daughter of Thomas Combellack and Elizabeth née Toy.
