Biography

Wylton Wemyss Todd. [1][2][3]

Wylton Todd was educated at Prince Alfred College and Adelaide University, and afterwards studied architecture in the United States and London, served in the Royal Air Force during the World War II, and spent 16 months as a prisoner of war at the famous Stalag Luft III. In 1947, he was commissioned to design the St. George's Chapel of Remembrance at the RAF aerodrome at Biggin Hill, in Kent, which was erected in memory of the airmen who fell in the Battle of Britain.[4][5]

The performing Arts:

  • Helped form the 'Jazz Frolics' company of singers and dancers.[14]
  • 1923, December 4: stage manager and producer of the 'Jazz Frolics' at the Melba House, Dulwich in aid of Queen's Home, to a packed house (for article, see [[59]]). This included his compositions Kathleen (performed by Mr. Cyril Langley and company), The Dancing Craze (sung by Cyril Langley and company) and The Syncopated Waltz (sung by Lorna Day and Kathleen Hain). His sister, Maisie Todd, also had a solo dance, and dance in the act that closed the first part, An Eastern Scena. His brother, Norman Todd, also took part.[15]
  • 1924, March: was a part of Jazz Frolics at the Prince Alfred College. (Sir) Robert Helpmann arranged the dance numbers. (See article A Clever Show at [[60]])[16]
  • 1925, March 30 - Supervised the 'capital performance' of The Japanese Teashop, an original musical revue by Wylton Todd. Wylton was also responsible for the scenery and stage accessories. (Sir) Robert Helpman(n) also performed in the revue, and dances throughout the revue were invented and arranged by Robert.[17]
  • 1925: played for the radio station 5DN in Adelaide, South Australia, in a programme of dance music with five other musicians (Wylton on piano), including (music composed by Wylton Todd): The collegians, Tropical moon, Home for Two, Oh, George, Syncopated waltz, and "Somebody's Pinched by Pyjamas![18], and "Somebody's Pinched by Pyjamas! was played at the Floating Palais on the Torrens river, Adelaide, South Australia (words by Mrs. J. Lavington Bonython)[19]
  • 1926, July 2: Played at the Royal Palais, Adelaide, South Australia[20]
  • 1931: went up to Birmingham and arranged the music for one of the parties of Mrs. Denis Heath (Ada Bonython that was). Mrs. Heath says that, "Wylton is still playing and just as wonderfully—when he comes up from London we always get him at the piano, and his music charms everybody."[21]

  • 1928, March 26: Departed Adelaide, South Australia, on the Melbourne Express, boarding the Aarangi[22] at Sydney for America, and then London, England[23][24] '...departed for overseas to do something in music, architecture, or designing. The versatile Adelaidean didn't mind which so long as he made his mark.'[25]

  • Designer: W. and J. Sloane, United States of America ('one of the most exclusive and "pricey" interior decorators on fifth-avenue.')[33]
  • 1930: Awarded the prize for the Problem Design competition issued by The Beaux Arts Institute of Design, of New York. (Two hundred and twenty eight Bright Brains from American Universities (including the famous Yale) and from Washington, New York and Columbia Colleges and architectural clubs competed.)[34]
  • Designer: 1931 - as designer for Sir John Burnett[35]
  • Architect: 1931 - built a bridge for Liverpool[36]
  • Designer: 1931 - converted an old French salon into modern—designing furniture, choosing rugs, drapings, and so on. "Extreme but intensely interesting subjects," he says. [37]
  • Performer: 1932, October - on television at the Baird studio, London, playing and singing his own songs. Letter to an Adelaide friend: 'Imagine me with a bright blue mouth, blue round the eyes, and blue eyebrows. That is the make-up, and it looks hideous. The room is about 15 by 15, with a small stage and a piano. At the opposite end is a glass window, where the television machine throws a flickering beam of light on the performer's face. The microphone is quite close.'[38]
  • Architect: 1937, October - transformed the mansion in Stanhope Gate, Park Lane, London, where Clarence Gatry one lived, into a restaurant.[39]
  • Architect: 1947, July - commissioned to design the St George's Chapel of Remembrance at the R.A.F. Aerodrome at Biggin Hill, Kent, England, which was erected in memory of the airmen who fell at the Battle of Britain[40]

  • Virginia Dorothea[44] Young[45], the only child of Mrs and Mrs Thomas Young, of London and New Jersey, at the first evening wedding at St Margarets, Westminster, England[46][47], in December 1934. Newspaper article is as follows:
  • Engaged.—The many Adelaide friends of Mr. Wylton Todd will be interested to hear that a cable message was received by his parents, announcing his engagement to an American girl. She is an only child, and her photograph shows her to be very pretty. The formal announcement is:—'The engagement is announced of Virginia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Young, of London, and New Jersey, to Wylton Wemyss Todd, of London, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Todd, of Newington, Toorak.[48]

World War II

  • had to lie about his age in order to enlist in the Royal Air Force (RAF), however, was promoted to Flight Lieutenant as a navigator with No. 169 Squadron RAF.
  • became a prisoner-of-war at Stalag Luft III after 'bailing out' over Germany on 15th February 1944.
  • was involved in helping the famous Great Escape attempt, although not an escapee himself: designing, digging (under the theatre) and distracting (working with the theatre group.
  • when he heard of the Gestapo murders of fifty of the escapees, designed and built the memorial which continues to stand in tribute to the fallen.[53] to the 50 murdered POWs after the Great Escape that still graces the old camp. Todd, a gifted musician, also provided much needed entertainment to the men of North Compound.'[54]
