Biography

Born Arthur Seymour TOD on September 8th, 1880, in Angastown, South Australia[1]

  • Some time in the five years after his older brother was convicted of wilful murder in 1899 he added an extra D to the end of his surname, probably to distance himself from the country-wide interest.[2][3]

Married Louisa Maysie Wemyss at Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Australia in 30 November 1904 .[6]Family notice in newspaper reads:

  • 'TOD-WEMYSS.--On the 30th November the the residence of the bride's parents, 31 Eglinton street, Moonee Ponds, by the Rev. D. Macrae Stewart, Arthur Seymour Tod, of Leongatha, to Maysie Louisa Wemyss, oldest daughter of duncan Wemyss, Esq, of Murchison.'[7]

Sentenced to hard labour for one year in August, 1910, for embezzling ₤28 belonging to the State Machinery Company whilst at Mount Gambier. Judge Gordon, who presided, remarked that drink appeared to be at the bottom of the case.[8]Ref AU5103-1910 SA Police Gazette 1910. Ancestry.com. Went Missing on 10th February, 1914[9], and was, on the 25th of the same month, had a warrant issue with the statement that he did unlawfully leave without adequate means of support his wife, Maysie Louisa Todd.[10] The warrant was withdrawn on April 1st, 1914[11], and a notice posted that he had 'been heard from'.[12]

Accused of fraud in 1924.[13][14][15]He was sentenced to three and a half years' hard labour at Yatala Prison near Adelaide, South Australia[16][17]. Exact charge was 'fraudulent conversion on Alfred Aaron Hains'[18]. Newspaper article follows:

  • 'In 1924, now a well-known Adelaide land agent, Arthur Seymour Todd was commited for sentence at the Adelaide Court today on a charge of fraudulently converting ₤1,010 to his own use. Todd pleaded guilty and did not apply for bail.'[19]

Breached the Land Agents Act in Adelaide and was fined ₤3 and costs ₤1 11s., or 14 days Detention.[20]

  • 1903: 21 Lorne St, Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Australia[21]. He was living with his father at this time.
  • 1908: Barkley terrace east, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. Both Arthur and his wife Maysie Louisa were registered here on that year's Electoral Roll. Arthur's occupation is listed as traveller, and Maysie's as home duties. [22]
  • 1924: 140 Alexander Avenue, Toorak, South Australia, Australia[23]
  • 1929-1943: 140 Alexandra Ave, Burnside/Toorak, South Australia. Both Arthur and his wife Maysie Louisa are registered here on the 1939, 1941, and 1943 Electoral Rolls. Arthur's occupation is registered as salesman, and Maysie as having home duties. Their children Maisie Allison and Mervyn Keith are also registered here for both years.[24] I am not sure if his son Mervyn Keith is registered there on the 1943 roll as not all the Todds were listed on the page I had access to, and he did serve in the war.

Died on 17 Aug 1963 [25]

Buried at Centennial Park, Pasadena, South Australia. Died age 82. Resided at Toorak Gardens. Plot: South East, Indiv Rose Bed 1, Position 625. [26]
