Biography

Mary Throope was born in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut about 1723, an approximate birth year calculated from her age of 78 years on the date of her death, which occurred on January 17, 1801. This approximate birth year is commensurate with the "Warren Silver Book," presenting Mary's birth year as "say early 1723." See "Research Notes" and "Comments" section below for additional information concerning Mary's birth date. Mary was the daughter of Samuel and Dorothy (Gray) Throope.

Mary married Joshua Barker on November 8, 1739 in Lebanon, Connecticut. They settled in New Lebanon and had 8 children including Eliphalet b. 1740, Mary b. 1744, Lydia b. 1746, Bethiah b. 1749, Nehemiah b. 1751, John b. 1754, Rebeckah b. 1759, and Joshua b. 1763.

A widow, Mary passed away at age 78 in Connecticut on June 17, 1801, probated in Hartford, Connecticut and completed 1801. An inscription detail is also described and confirmed in the Hale Collection of "Connecticut Headstone Inscriptions" (Vol. 23). She is buried at the Old Cemetery located in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.

Research Notes

As a Data Doctor, I changed the birth date to before 1727 in response to an error generated on a Data Doctors challenge list. The original date of "about 23 Jan 1726" did not agree with the date in the FindAGrave citation of 17 Jul 1726, which generated the error. The FAG date is the baptism date as seen in the Connecticut, Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920 for Mary Thorpe.[1] However, the citation for Connecticut Town Birth records from ancestry.com lists Jan 23, 1726/7, although the written synopsis of the record states 23 Jan 1726. [2]The sole citation at Family search lists 23 Jan 1726 as taken from "Connecticut Births and Christenings, 1649-1906", [3]In lieu of a continuing Data Doctors error message, perhaps the before date of 1627 should stand until the FAG error is corrected. I contacted the PM about this problem but did not describe it as well in the message as I have here. I will contact FAG about the error.

According to the Warren Silver Book, Mary was born "say early 1723." Her brother, Macey, was born "probably 23 January 1726/7."[4]

According to the Warren Silver Book, Mary was born "say early 1723." Her brother, Macey (his grandmother's maiden name), was born "probably 23 January 1726/7." Thank you, Sandra. Per the "Connecticut Cemetery Inscriptions," p. 54, inscribed on Mrs. Mary [Throop] Barker's headstone, which is shared with her husband Capt. Josiah, is her age at death on January 17, 1801 being "aged 78 years," which indeed calculates to an approximate date of her birth being early 1723 or in 1722. I see that the Barbour Collection (transcription of Lebanon [CT] Vital Records, Vol. 1, p. 306) under surname "THROOPE, THROOP" presents her birth date as "Mary, [d. Samuel & Dorothy], b. Jan. 23, 1726/7[.]" However, on the same page in the Barbour Collection is the death date and age at death of Macey Throop (Macey being brother of Mary): "Macey, d. April 21, 1756, in the 30th y. of his age[.]" Macey's age at death thereof more closely calculates to the birth date the Barbour Collection interpreted for Mary's birth date. This supports that there was either a transcription error in the Barbour Collection or a recording error in the original Vital Record. Further, Mary and Josiah married on November 8, 1739. Her alleged birth date of January 23, 1726/7 would have meant she was only age 13 at time of her marriage and about age 14 when her 1st child was born, which certainly would not have been commensurate with the religious mores of the time. They married at the Lebanon First Congregational Church. Therefore, her birth year being "before Jan. 1723" and even more likely before November 1722, would make her age at marriage to be about 17 years old. Thank you for updating Mary's profile pending PM's update of her FAG Memorial.

Sandra, I also just noticed that Mary's death date may be incorrect in the "Connecticut Cemetery Inscriptions," which reports Mary's date of death as January 17, 1801, instead of June 17, 1801. So, it appears that this vital datum is also in error. The month of June does agree with the "Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions" and also the July 13, 1801 date when administration of Mary's estate appears to have been initiated.
