People call me Sue, I'm 79 years old and have working on genealogy (steadily) since I was in my 30's. Fortunately, when a teen and in my 20's I started gathering information because it came in handy when those relatives passed away. I am a former teacher (ESL--English as a second language) and taught junior high.

I am a 4th generation Californian, but went to Oregon State University. After that I joined the Teacher Corps and ended up in McAllen, Hidalgo Co, Texas. My husband was my next-door neighbor. We have been married over 51 years now and we have 3 sons, John, Dan, and Michael. Dan and I do not have the same DNA because we adopted him when he was 5 years old and he is Choctaw-Irish. I am also working on my husband's tree and have seen a lot of excellent records in Spanish.

Ms. Guerra, could you enter the sources you have for Priscilla Harlan, Harlan-1768, for being the daughter of Jonathan Harlan and Elizabeth (Fawcett) Harlan. You posted indicating you would add the source. I can't locate a source with this info. Thanks.

Dear Paul:

I'm sorry I am too late with this. I do not have a Priscilla as a daughter of Jonathan Harlan and Elizabeth Fawcett. I have Lydia, Mary, Sarah, Betsey, and Rachel as daughters and Jonathan (my direct ancestor), Amos, and Jacob as the children. Sue Guerra

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Dear Cheryl: Thank you for writing! It is always nice to be welcomed and many have been kind enough to do that. To be perfectly honest, the New Member How To pages are very confusing to me. I don't know the terminology used here yet and I am not sure what to do. I have tried asking the Gen Source or whatever it's called but I am alway told to refer to the very pages that I didn't understand in the first place, So, I just try to add my family tree one by one so that it is easy to read.

Other than not understanding the information page, I have only one real problem. First of all, I do not have a problem merging with someone with the same tree, providing it really IS the same tree. I was able to attach my Coombs ancestors onto a Coombs tree. Fine. However, I am having an on-going problem in my Tharp/Thorp/Thorp family (yes, the name changes over time---I was born "Tharp"). Many years ago I believed what everyone else seems to believe---that the Thorp family goes through George Thorpe of Berkeley Hundred fame, It doesn't. His 2 grandchildren, George and Anna, never had any children and his son only had George and Anna. I learned the truth of that in 2008 when we went to Berkeley and Wanswell so that I could do some research on the Thorpe family there. The historian in the Berkeley Castle gave that info to me and of course, it is on the article WAnswell Court over 7 Generations published by the Brisol and Gloucestershire Archealogical Society. I took me an entire day to get the correct parent with my Thomas Thorpe b 1633 and the next day people would change it all over again. I finally decided to work on other branches or I would never have a chance to get them on! I really do not want to be associated with a tree that I KNOW I incorrect. Sorry to bother you about it. I really makes me angry. Oh yes--I have sources. You can't prove anything unless you have good sources! Sue Guerra

Hi ,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

Welcome to WikiTree and thanks for signing the Honor Code! I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the last several years.

Check out the How-to pages for some quick tips on working with both the Wiki pages and our other members. There is some great information in those pages.

I see that you have had your DNA tested, congratulations! Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. To get the best results, you need to continue adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to existing profiles in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, try a different one. 24 hours after you connect to an existing profile, your test will have populated on the profiles of your ancestors and their descendants, where others with potential matches may also appear.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, use the reply link to let me know. Have fun!

Dear Debbie:

At this point, I have many questions and I have searched through everything that is posted but I cannot find the answers anywhere! Also, yesterday I passed the test to see if I was fit to do anything past 1500, but today a sign came up again that I had to take the test again and could not enter an ancestor who was born in 1490! Debbie, I have been working on genealogy for over 40 years and to date I have over 38,000 people in my tree so first of all, that was rather insulting and second of all, I passed the test yesterday so why can't I continue?

Secondly, I read everything about adding photographs, which seemed straightforward enough, so I have all the photos that I would like to upload on my desktop ready-to-go, but when I hit the "upload" button I could only see a lot of very small circles without names. I didn't dare upload anything in case I ended up getting my high school reunion on Wikitree. I think everything on my desktop was shown, but not identified, How can I tell which is the right photo?

Third, every time I fill in another person on the tree I am asked if I want to make it "trusted." I don't understand what that means. Does that mean that I have to approve people to see it? I just wanted to have the information out there so that I could help others. Should I press "trusted" each time or not?

Finally, Robert Washington Tharp was my great-great-grandfather and I have a LOT of information about him. I don't live far from where he lived so I have several photos as well. Someone else already created his "website," which is fine. After having 10 children I am sure there are hundreds of us who are related. My cousin's wife, Joan Tharp's name is there and I suspect she added that site. However, she died many years ago. I do I get to be "trusted"? How do I get invited to a website? How can I add sources to the existing website? And, I know I could create a. much fuller biography for Robert! Please don't tell me to look at the Wikitree files. I have and they do not answer any of my questions! I hope you will reply to me.

Sincerely, Suzanne (Tharp) Guerra. [email address removed]

Hi Sue,

I'm so sorry for the delay in replying. I was called out of town. I don't know if you have already gotten answers to your questions but I will try to help.

The Quiz that you took was for adding pre-1700 profiles which most members will eventually run in to. The quiz is mainly to confirm that members understand the need for collaboration and reliable sources. It's obvious that you know that from a glance at the work you are doing on the Tharp profiles.

For pre-1500 profiles, there is a further expectation that members will have developed not just research skills but also WikiTree skills. Members who work on profiles for people of that time period are expected to be working with the Projects which manage many of those profiles, be aware of how to use inline references, and to have shown their ability to research in the many reliable sources which are now available to us.

Looking at your current contributions, it looks like you figured out the loading a pictures. I'm sorry I wasn't quicker to provide answers.

Regarding the "trusted" question, I need a little more information because I haven't come across this before. Is this happening when you are creating a parent, spouse, or child using a link on a profile which is managed by someone? As a general rule, trusted access is only needed if the profile is for someone with privacy higher than the open level (ie not a white lock) or for very specific changes. For instance, your great-grandmother's profile has open privacy, so I was able to fix the mixed case in her married surname (BArnes to Barnes) as well as add details to her birth location (spelled out the state name and add the country name). If the case change had been needed in her maiden name (URton to Urton), I could not have done that because I am not on the trusted list.

It looks like you also figured out how to be able to update your great-great-grandfather's profile and are now a co-manager. That profile is looking great. Let me know if you would like information on how to create inline references. I will be out of town again starting on Friday and back on Monday.

See you in the branches,

Debi
