Eleanor Taylor Bland was an African-American writer of crime fiction. She was the creator of Lincoln Prairie, Illinois police detective Marti McAllister.
Eleanor Taylor Bland was born on December 31, 1944, in Boston, Massachusetts to a white mother and black father. She married Anthony Bland when she was 14 about 1958 and had at least two children, including Kevin and Todd. They divorced after 31 years of marriage.
Eleanor was an African-American writer of crime fiction. She was the creator of Lincoln Prairie, Illinois police detective Marti McAllister. She died on June 2, 2010, in Waukegan, Illinois, at the age of 65.
The Calvin Center for Faith & Writing called Eleanor a "pioneer in crime fiction...When she passed away in 2010, she was one of the most prolific African American authors in the genre...Bland created an enduring heroine who went against the grain of perpetuated stereotypes related to African American women in much of U.S. popular culture."
