Biography

John “Adam” was born 21 May 1756 in the family homestead. He was the youngest child of John Schwab and Catharine Graff (Grove). He married Sarah Grabill of Lancaster where they had 7 children. Children

At his wife's urging in 1800, they moved to Littleton in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Adam was a silversmith who also held extensive lands in Virginia. In Littleton, he attempted an unsuccessful mill which was abandoned for lack of sufficient hydropower. Adam joined Capt Roland’s “Associators” company the 5th of July 1775 “for the defence of American liberty”. He died 7 Feb 1821 and is buried at his church, St. John’s Lutheran in Littleton. [1]

Research Notes

Find a Grave lists a different birthdate of 1755-10-24 however this is unreferenced. I have used the birthdate from the Swope History as it contains two detailed pages about John Adam Swope. Auborn-4 04:10, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

In Evans and Ellis's History of Lancaster Co. There is listed in the Leacock Twp. section (but not in the Rev. War chapter!) a company of Leacock Twp. Associators which were organized on 5 July 1775 who on organization day elected John Roland jr. as their captain.This company later were members of the "Flying Camp" and were riflemen, and is documented in the PA archives Rev. War. period.[2]

An "Adam Swope" served in Col. John Shee's 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment.[3]
