Biography

Mary was baptised on 8 October 1706 at St Peter, Felkirk, Yorkshire, "Mary daughter of Joseph and Mary Swift",[1]

She married Jonas Priestley on 11 May 1732 at St Peter, Felkirk, "Jonas Priest (sic) of Birstal and Mary Swift of this parish".[2] The couple lived at Fieldhead, Birstall, and had several children there, including Joseph Priestley the discoverer of oxygen and Timothy Priestley a well known dissenting minister.[3]

Mary died in 1739 and was buried at Birstall on 30 December 1739 "Mary wife of Jonas Priestley of Birstal Fieldhead".[4]

Research Notes

The first three children were born before the marriage, possibly to first wife Mary Naylor. Further note: A Jonas Priestley married Mary Naylor in East Ardsley, Yorkshire in June 1737. This is likely a different Jonas. Jonas born 1699 married twice: Mary Swift in 1732 and Hannah Wilson in 1741.
