Biography

Born Dorothy was born in 1857 ^[1]. She was the third child and oldest daughter of John Swain and Eliza Ward. She was baptised on 22 February 1857 in North Wingfield ^[2].

In 1861 ^[3] Dorothy (4) was living with her parents John (32) coal miner and Eliza (30) in Pilsley together with siblings Samuel (8), Joseph (6) and Sarah (1).
In March 1864 her mother died age 32 ^[4] and her father remarried the following year ^[5]. By 1871 ^[6] Dorothy was employed as a domestic servant for John Brockripp, "inn keeper" and his family in Pilsley .

Marriage In 1879 Dorothy age 22 married the 63 year old Samuel Bower, "farmer of 5 acres and cattle dealer" ^[7]. Samuel was a widower; his first wife, Ann had died earlier that year ^[8].

In 1881 ^[9] Dorothy and Samuel "farmer of 16 acres" were living with baby daughter Ann (1) in Lindway Lane Whittinglow Derbyshire-
In 1891 ^[10] Dorothy (36) and Samuel (74) "agricultural labourer" were living in Brackenfield with their five children.
Samuel died in 1897 age 81 ^[11] and was buried on 7 January in Brackenfield Derbyshire ^[12].

Marriage Dorothy married Henry Fletcher, "coal miner" in 1899 ^[13].
In 1901 ^[14] Dorothy (41) and her daughter Ruth Emily Bower (11) were living in Brackenfield with Henry Fletcher (33) "coal miner hewer".
In 1911 ^[15] Dorothy and Henry together with her daughter Ruth were living at Holly Cottage Hallfield Gate Shirland and Higham; Dorothy and Henry are recorded as married 12 years and no children.
In December 1915 Dorothy attended the funeral of her half brother Tom in Sheffield; her name was reported as "Mrs Patilla" (see biography of her husband Henry) .
In 1921 ^[16] Dorothy Patilla (62) and Henry Patilla (52) "Coal miner hewer" were living in Market Street, Clay Lane, Derbyshire.

Died Dorothy Fletcher died age 67 in 1924 ^[17].
