A Last Tribute - Funeral of Mr. Tom Swain
A Newspaper Cutting from Sheffield Evening Telegraph of 6th December 1915

Representatives of all the traders' bodies in Sheffield with which the late Mr. Tom Swain had been associated during his business career attended the funeral at Cily Road Cemetery to-day. In the Sheffield markets, amongst the tenants of which the deceased gentleman had been for many years an honoured and active figure, business was suspended at noon to two o'clock, and in Seagrave Road, where Mr Swain's residence is located, every blind was drawn.

The service was conducted by Rev. J. A. Bell, curate of Sale Memorial Church, assisted by Rev. J. G. Speakman, curate of St- Aidan's. The hymn "Lead Kindly Light" was sung with great feeling, and following the solemn service, Mr Bell briefly addressed the mourners.

It needed no words of his, he said, to tell of the worth of the one who had gone from them. The presence at that service of so many representatives of public bodies was a significant indication of the respect in which Mr Swain was held, and if the men with whom he had business dealings honoured him it was obvious that he was worthy of it. His generous disposition was only a part of his fine character, and during the time it had been his (the speaker's) pleasure to visit Mr Swain he had formed an attachment which made the loss a really personal one to him.

The private mourners were Mrs Swain (widow), Val and Frank (sons), Mr Geo. Swain (brother), Mrs Hopkins (sister), Lce.-Corporal and Mrs Edward Swain (brother and sister-in-law), Mr & Mrs John Swain (brother and sister-in-law), the Rev. C. A. Swain (brother), Mrs Hukin and Mrs D. Pattila (sisters), Mrs Shaw and Mrs Marsh, Mr M. S. Hukin, Mr and Mrs Warde (Cresswell), Mr and Mrs W. E. Broughton, Messrs T. and W. Ayre (Alfreton), Mr H. Whittington, Mr, J. Bishop (Normanton on Trent) and Mrs Hazell.
