Biography

Albert Suskin has Jewish Roots.

Albert was born on 11 Jun 1910 in New Bern, North Carolina. He was the son of Mark Suskin and Jennie (Kramer) Suskin.

In 1925 he was a sophomore at New Bern High School,[1][2][3] in 1926 a junior,[4][5] and in 1927 a senior.[6][7][8][9]

In 1926, Albert is listed as a student and as residing at 17 Metcalf St. in New Bern (now 214 Metcalf St.).[10] In 1937, he is listed as a student and as residing at 418 Rhems Ave. (now 1617 Rhem Ave.).[11]

In 1931 he is listed as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in the Yearbook of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[12] He received his A. B. (1931), Master's (1932), and Ph. D. (1937) degrees from UNC, Chapel Hill.[13]

Albert Suskin taught continuously in the Department of Classics at UNC (except for military service, 1942-1946) from 1936 until his death, as instructor (1936-1946), Assistant Professor (1946-1950), Associate Professor (1950-1953), Professor of Classics (1953-1965), and Department Chair (1960-1965). He had just been reappointed for a second five-year term as Chair at the time of his death.[13] He was also an assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC (1960-1965).[14]

Albert served in the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant during World War II. He had Army Serial No. 34 306 904[15] and was stationed in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.[16] While in Europe, he earned several medals, including the vermeil (silver-gilt) Medal of the Order of the Oak Crown of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg[13] (see picture 4).

Albert married a former student, Lavinia Lee Smith, on 30 May 1953 at Southern Pines, Moore, North Carolina.[17] They had 2 children: Mark Albert and Marcia Patton.[13] In 1957, he is listed as residing at 200 Wilson Ct. (with his wife "Luvenia").[18] In 1959, 1961, and 1962 he is listed as residing at 410 Estes Dr. (with his wife).[19][20][21]

Albert passed away on 7 Aug 1965 in Chapel Hill[22][23] and is buried at Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.[24][25][26]

The Albert Suskin Memorial Fund was established after Albert's death by his friends and family. It is used (1) to fund a competitive annual prize for an undergraduate student for excellence in Latin poetry and (2) to support undergraduate and graduate students working in Classics.[27]
