Biography

John H. Sununu is an American politician who was the 75th governor of New Hampshire from 1983 to 1989 and later White House chief of staff under President George H. W. Bush. Party: Republican.

John H. Sununu was born 2 Jul 1939 in Havana Cuba, the son of John Saleh Sununu and Victoria Dada. His father was American and his mother Salvadoran, of Greek, Hispanic and Lebanese descent. He was the first Arab American, Greek American, and Hispanic American to be governor of NH and White House chief of staff.

He graduated from Tufts University with a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 1966.

John H. Sununu moved to Salem, New Hampshire from Concord, MA in 1969. He served on the local Salem (NH) Planning Board, and served in New Hampshire House in 1973 and 1974. He had unsuccessful runs for NH state Senate and Executive Council. He was elected Governor of NH in 1982. John H. Sununu was appointed White House chief of Staff by the elder President George H W Bush in 1988.

John H. Sununu married Nancy M Hayes. They have eight children, including former U.S. Senator John E. Sununu and New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu,
