Research Notes

Regarding the spelling of Sullins/Sullens: It is difficult to pin down a source with a firm spelling of this name.

  • The documentation of her marriage seems to go both ways on this subject.[1][2]
  • Her Find A Grave: Memorial #69468313 uses Sullins, but it is not on the grave marker, her married name is.
  • Her great grandfather's Find A Grave: Memorial #65407784 also uses Sullins even though he is represented as Sullens in Family Search.
  • Family Search shows her as "Sullins" as are eight of her siblings. However two siblings are "Sullens" as is her father! But then his father is back to "Sullins" and it alternates like that for at least two more generations. Here is a summary of the Family Search info:
Nancy Sullins
Josiah Sullens - father - nine children spelled with "i", two with "e"
Nathan Sullins - grandfather - six children spelled with "i", four with "e"
Richard Sullens - great grandfather - two children spelled with "i", two with "e"
John Sullins - great great grandfather - Richard was the only child listed using "e"
Elias Sullins - 3 great grandfather - all three children also spelled with the "i"

Its a sure bet the spelling of their name is discussed at every family reunion! And each side of the debate has an ancestor to look back to as an example. But Sullins does seem to go "further back."

Most importantly, what did Nancy use herself? If anyone has better documentation, please note it here!

Sullins-188 and Sullens-24 appear to represent the same person because: Married to same man, and have one kid the same. Otherwise, there is no data to compare with! Now we just need to figure out the spelling of the name!
