Johann "John" Stritzel was born on 27 July 1852 in Krapflern #11, Gottschee, Krain, Austria (present-day Občice, Dolenjske Toplice, Slovenia) to Johann Stritzel and Agnes Schwaschnig.
John married Barbara Schober of Reuter on 28 May 1873 in Reuter. Together they had 13 children in total, 8 having been born in or around Port Clinton, Ottawa, Ohio, and 2 others dying before immigrating.
They immigrated together around October 1882 on the S.S. Elbe, landing in New York City. He was listed as a laborer. The family settled in or around the unincorporated community of Gypsum within Portage Township, specifically near the Plasterbed community.
John declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States on 4 April 1887 before the Probate Court of Ottawa County, Ohio. He officially applied to become a citizen of the United States on 13 September 1889, and was granted it soon afterwards.
He worked as a laborer in a plaster mill for numerous years before becoming a fruit farmer. They lived for many years on a farm on Lockwood Road (near its intersection with Plasterbed Road) before John sold the land in 1927, after which he lived with his children in Sandusky.
John passed away on 6 June 1928 at Pool Hospital in Port Clinton after battling bladder cancer, and was buried three days later in Lakeview Cemetery.
This community regrets the passing of John Stritzel, who died last week Wednesday at the Pool hospital, Port Clinton. Mr. Stritzel had lived on a farm on the Lockwood road for a number of years, and was a fine neighbor and friend. He was a great church worker and attended services regularly each Sunday. A few years ago, after the death of his wife he sold his farm to the U. S. Gypsum Co., after which he made his home with his children. For the past few months he lived in Sandusky with a daughter, and just before his death he made his home here with his daughter, Mrs. Mackey. This community extends sympathy to the bereaved family. Funeral services were held last Saturday from the Holy Angels church, with interment in Lakeview cemetery.
