Study (107):The surname of Benjamin Barbee's wife Phebe is not known to the compilers.She may possibly have been Phebe Stovall, who lived in the same neighborhood.Bartholemew Stovall named a daughter Phebe in his will dated 22 Dec 1802, proved Feb Court 1803, recorded in ORANGE WILLS D-91.This will was witnessed by Benjamin (x) Barbee, Daniel Green, and Elisha Marcum.No proof has been found.There are no Orange Co., NC, marriage bonds before 1781.

STUDY (108):Phebe Barbee's will was dated 12 Dec 1836, proved at Court, Feb, 1837, recorded in ORANGE WILLS E-410. Legatees were daughters Gemima Hopkins, Mary King; grandson Francis Barbee; granddaughters "all the daughters of Gabriel Barbee . . . Drucilla, Nancy Noe (?), Phebe Ann Barbee" (no punctuation)."To Luvenia (? Laurania ?) Motley, $.50 she is to have no more of my estate."Daughter Elizabeth Rencher. Executor Gabriel Barbee. Witensses, Isaiah Marcum, David Malone.

Orange County Inventories & Sales 1826-1830 gives the reports of Gabriel Barbee as Executor for Benjamin and Phebe.Benjamin's sale of perishable property took place on 30 Dec. 1826.Pages 63-65.Three of his sons-in-law attended this sale.Phebe's smaller estate was sold 24 Mar 1837, page 43.

Supplement (S-108-1) has information re: the estate sale of Phoebe Barbee in 1837 and 1838.

As for the date set forth on Barbee's Crossroads, you might just ask Janet where she may have received the information.She is very good at keeping track of sources and responding.Maybe it's a different Phoebe Stovall? ^[1]

The profile previously had the following dates:

Birth: 17 August 1792 Granville, North Carolina

Death: 14 January 1829 Orange, North Carolina

But the 1792 birth date was two years after her daughter was born, and the death date was several years before she wrote her will. Possibly these are the dates for a different person, and the parents were listed as:

Bartholomew Stovall

Ann Boswell

But since she is not attached to any parents, and is only connected to a husband and daughter, her death date has been set based on the dates her will was written and proved, and her birth date has been removed, because the birth date of one of her many children isn't enough for an accurate estimate. If a source is found for the 1761 marriage, then her age could be estimated.
