John Stockman, Gent., baptized at Whiteparish, Wiltshire, England on 15 December 1645, was the son of Joseph Stockman, Esq..[1] and Anne Leigh.[2]
Emigration
John emigrated from Wiltshire to New England and settled near Salisbury, Massachusetts.[2] Depositions from a later court case suggest he may also have spent some time in Virginia.[3]
Marriage and Children
John married at Salisbury, Massachusetts 10 May 1671 Sarah Pike, widow of Wymond Bradbury, daughter of Major Robert Pike, of Salisbury, Massachusetts and his first wife Sarah Sanders.[2] John and Sarah had four sons and two daughters:
In 1673, John Stockman claimed property under the terms of the 1655 will of his uncle, William Stockman. William had bequeathed property to John Stockman's father, Joseph Stockman, with successive reversions to John's older
legitimate brother, William, and then to John himself.[3][10] Even though John Stockman's father was then living, John's older brother, William Stockman, had disposed of the property before his own death.[3]
In 1676, a further legal disagreement took place between John Stockman and his sister, Constance Stockman, as to whether or not their father, Joseph Stockman, had left a valid will.[3][11] John Stockman alleged that the father left no will at all; however Constance countered that their father had left a valid will duly probated in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, in which will she was named executrix. John himself had been left out of the will altogether.[3][12] Constance acknowledged in her legal depositions that John Stockman was the "only son" and "heir at Common Law" to their father.[3]
Lands
In 1678, Elizabeth's parents conveyed to John and Elizabeth a portion of lands they had purchased from Governor Endicott and others.[2]
Death and Burial
John Stockman died at Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1686,[13] on 10 December.[2] John's estate was probated on 8 April 1687.[14] Administration was granted to his widow, Sarah, on 13 April 1687.[2]
His widow Sarah died at Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1718,[15] on 6 May.[2]
