Biography

Buckner was born on 31 May 1807. He was the son of Richard Stith and Elizabeth Jones.[1] He was first married in 1829 to Cindarilla Moreman, daughter of Achilles Venable Moreman and Elizabeth Stith. The marriage was celebrated by John Stith (1790-1833), a Methodist minister in Big Springs, Breckinridge County, Kentucky,[2] who appears to have been a cousin to each. Buckner and Cindarilla had the following children:

Lucy Catherine Stith, b. 1830, m. Henry Cain
Mary Elizabeth Stith, b. 1831, m. Wm. F. Morgan
Rachel Ann Stith, b. 1832, m. Edward Y. Mcquown
Charles Moorman Stith, b. 1834, m. M. E. Wells
Evaline Stith, b. 1836, m. James Mcquown
Rhoda Ann Stith, b. 1838, m1. Thos. E. Cain, m2. Jesse H. Jones
Annis Haskill Stith, b. 1839, m. Christopher C. Beasley

In June 1837, Buckner J. Stith, joined by his wife Cinderilla, his father Richard and mother Betsey, sold to Thomas H. Stith 45 acres out of a tract of 520 acres that Richard and his father had purchased in 1836 from Benjamin W. Stith and wife.[3]. In November of 1837, Richard and Betsey Stith conveyed their interest in the remaining 475 acres to Buckner, "in consideration of the natural love and affection which they have & bear toward the said Buckner J. Stith their son."[4]

Buckner's second marriage in 1843 was to Mary Cofer. They had the following children:

Albert F. Stith, b. 1846
Elvira Bell Stith, b. 1848
Leander Stith, b. 1851

Buckner passed away on 1 September 1856.[1]

Research Notes

The marriage between Buckner and Cindarilla Moreman is troublesome in light of the ancestry of each, which as presently set out in Wikitree appears to be reasonably supported by both original documents and family records beyond those yet cited. If correct, Buckner was a first cousin of CIndarilla's father, Achilles Venable Moorman (1790-1835), and a double first cousin to her mother, Elizabeth Johns (Stith) Moorman (1795-aft.1873). His cousin who performed the marriage ceremony could not have been unaware of these facts, if true.

A possibly related issue is the report which some have disputed about a third marriage of Buckner to Emily (Haynes) Bowmer, widow of William Bowmer and daughter of William Haynes (abt.1774-1856). The will of William Haynes directed that the portion of Emily Stith "not be paid either to her or her husband," and that his son Henry act as trustee and annually pay her the interest on her portion, with the principal payable to her children after her death.[5] William Haynes, the Stiths and the Joneses all emigrated to Kentucky from adjoining Campbell and Bedford Counties, Virginia, and would have been familiar with each other's families. It appears that William disapproved of some aspect of his son–in–law's history.
