Biography

Cindarilla was born about 1812 to Achilles Venable Moorman and Elizabeth Johns (Stith) Moorman. Her parents were first cousins, a marriage practice not uncommon in the early 19th century as it helped preserve family wealth and occurred naturally within the proximity of a family circle. Her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Buckner (Stith) Moorman (1762-1843), was the sister of her maternal grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Stith (1768-1821), who had married Rhoda (Jones) Stith (1777-1851).

On 5 March 1829 she married Buckner Jones Stith in Hardin County, Kentucky, with her father's consent.[1][2][3]. The ceremony was performed by John Stith (1790-1833), a Methodist minister in Big Springs, Breckinridge County, Kentucky,[4] who appears to have been a cousin to each. Buckner was the son of Richard Stith Jr. (1778-1843) and Elizabeth (Jones) Stith (1779-1844). His father was a brother to the Stith siblings mentioned earlier. His mother was the sister of Cindarilla's paternal grandmother. The net result of these lineages is that Buckner was a first cousin to each of her parents through the Stith line and to her mother through the Jones line.

These intermarrying, first cousins were the grandchildren of:

Their descendants have Richard and Lucy Stith in their lineage three times and Thomas and Elizabeth Jones twice. It appears that there may have been adverse medical consequences from this extent of intermarriage. One grandson had three daughters: two were married but had no children, the third died of ovarian cancer at age 58.[5]

Their families continued to marry with the other prominent families who had moved west from the same Virginia counties and appear to have gained politial influence in their Kentucky counties. This was the pattern of Richard Stith, Sr., and his ancestors, as well. He gained significant influence from his family connections as the western Virginia counties were created. His occupation of surveyor was especially in demand in the newly–formed counties and he became the agent to dispose of substantial acreage for his relatives. Less is known about Thomas Jones's ancestors because the prevalence of his name makes his lineage harder to trace.

Cindarilla and Buckner had seven children:[3]

  • Lucy Catherine (Stith) Cain–born 1 June 1830, married Henry W. Cain on 23 December 1847, died March 1892.[6]
  • Mary Elizabeth (Stith) Morgan–born 12 December 1831, married William Francis Morgan on 2 October 1851, died 14 December 1896.[7]
  • Rachel Ann (Stith) McQuown–born 9 December 1832, married Edward Young McQuown on 15 September 1849, died 15 August 1906.[8]
  • Charles Moorman Stith–born 24 July 1834, married Mary E. Wells on 14 November 1867, died 27 August 1886 in Cleveland.[9]
  • Evaline (Stith) Hardaway–born 2 August 1836, married first James H. McQuown on 20 April 1845 and second Thomas Parsons Hardaway on 23 December 1858, died 2 July 1911.[10]
  • Rhoda Ann (Stith) Jones–born 18 February 1838, married first Thomas Edward Cain on 1 June 1862 and second J. Hanson Jones on 2 August 1873, died 1902.[11]
  • Annis Haskill (Stith) Beasley–born 20 March 1839, married Christopher C. Beasley on 1 October 1865, died 26 December 1923 in Florida.[12]

Six girls and one boy under 10 years old were counted in the 1840 U.S. Census, with father Buckner J.. Stith and wife aged 20-30 years old.[13] By the 1850 U.S. Census, Cindarilla had died, their daughter Lucy Catherine had married, and husbanad Buckner had remarried and had the first child with his second wife.[14]

She passed away on 19 August 1841.[3] Her father Achilles Moorman had predeceased her, so when her grandfather, Jesse Adams Moorman, died in 1843, her children became the heirs for her share of his bequests. A 1844 settlement includes all, then unmarried, except for Lucy Catherine Stith.[15]
