Biography

Joseph Alexander Stewart, called both Joseph and Alexander, was born in 1820 in Peterboro, a village in the town of Smithfield, Madison County, New York, United States, according to his death certificate. He was the 8th of the 11 children of Scottish immigrants Alexander Stewart and his wife Margaret Sinclair.[1]

Joseph's siblings were Jane, Margaret, Robert A., John, William, Catherine, Jeanette, Archibald, Charles Nelson and James T.[2]

In 1786, Joseph's father, Alexander, aged 7, and Joseph's grandparents, Robert Stewart and Jane Wilson, plus his older aunt and uncles, emigrated from Foss, the parish of Dull, Perthshire, Scotland.[3] The family settled in Johnstown, Montgomery County in New York.[4]

Joseph's father spent the rest of his childhood and early adulthood in Johnstown, where the marriage record of Joseph's parents and the baptism records of most of Joseph's siblings are in the records of the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown.[5] By 1830,[6] they were living 90 miles west in Smithfield (part of which became Fenner), Madison County, New York, the same village of Joseph's late paternal Aunt Catherine Stewart and her husband Robert Stewart.[7]

By 1837, the family's home was in Manlius Four Corners (now Fayetteville), Onondago County, New York,[8][9] where the family of Archibald's Uncle James Stewart lived. Archibald's parents became members of the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church in April 1836. They left the Fayetteville church in September 1840,[10] when Joseph was 20 years old, and the family traveled 800 miles west to live in Pewaukee, Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

Marriage

Joseph Stewart married Hannah F. Olin on 16 Feb 1851 in Omro, Winnebago, Wisconsin. Hannah had been living with the family of her brother William A. Olin in Bloomingdale, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, per the 1850 census.[11]

Hannah F. Olin was born 26 Mar 1820 at Canton, St. Lawrence County, New York, the daughter of Caleb Olin, Jr. and his 1st wife Mary "Polly" Moore.[12]

Children

Joseph Stewart and his wife Hannah Olin had the following children.

  1. Florence Margaret Stewart (1852–1939), married Edward Warren Parker[13]
  2. James T. Stewart (1855–1871), never married[14]
  3. Leslie Olin Stewart (1860–1880), never married[15]

Research Notes

Birthplace Peterboro or Johnstown

According to Joseph Alexander Stewart's death record, he was born in Peterboro, which is a village in the town of Smithfield, Madison County, New York, where his family moved, per the 1830 census.[6] They had previously lived in Johnstown, Montgomery County (changed to Fulton County in 1838), per the 1820 census, which was the year of Joseph's birth.[28]

Since we can't pinpoint the exact year the family moved to Madison County, only some time between 1820 and 1826, when his brother Charles was born there,[29] either birth location is speculative.
