Biography

Robert A. Stewart, a mason and farmer, was born on 24 July 1808 in Johnstown, Montgomery (later Fulton) County, New York, United States.[1] He was baptized there on 5 Mar 1809 at the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown, the 3rd child and eldest son of the 11 children of Scottish immigrants Alexander Stewart and his wife Margaret Sinclair.[2]

His siblings were Jane, Margaret, John, William, Catherine, Jeanette, Joseph Alexander, Archibald, Charles Nelson and James T.[3]

In 1786, Robert's father, Alexander, aged 7, and Robert's grandparents, Robert Stewart and Jane Wilson, plus his older aunt and uncles, emigrated from Foss, the parish of Dull, Perthshire, Scotland.[4] The family settled in Johnstown, Montgomery County (name changed to Fulton County in 1838), in New York.[5]

Robert's father spent the rest of his childhood and early adulthood in Johnstown, where the marriage record of Robert's parents and the baptism records of Robert and most of his siblings are in the records of the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown.[6] By 1826, they were living 90 miles west in Smithfield (part of which became Fenner), Madison County, New York, the same village of Robert's late paternal Aunt Catherine Stewart and her husband Robert Stewart.[7]

By 1837, the family's home was in Manlius Four Corners (now Fayetteville), Onondago County, New York,[8] where the family of Robert's Uncle James Stewart lived. Robert's parents became members of the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church in April 1836. They left the Fayetteville church in September 1840,[9] and the family traveled 800 miles west to live in Pewaukee, Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

Marriage

Robert married Ann Jeanette Hibbard in January 1832 in Pompey, Onondaga County, New York. Ann was born there on 20 Feb 1811, the daughter of Isaac Van Vleck Hibbard and his 1st wife, Frances Prindle.[10]

Three years before his parents moved to Pewaukee, Waukesa County, Wisconsin, Robert and his brother William moved 775 miles west from Manlius (renamed Fayetteville in 1844), Onondaga County, New York to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1842, he moved his family from New York to a farm he acquired in Pewaukee, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, 17 miles west of Milwaukee.[11]

Children

Robert and Ann had the following children:

  1. Isaac Newton Stewart (1837–1915), married Mary J. Dickerman, Nellie M. Wright[12]
  2. Mary E Stewart (1840–1931), never married [13]
  3. Frances Margaret Stewart (1842–1920), married Richard E. Witte[14]

Obituary

STEWART

At his residence in Pewaukee, March 30, 1991, Mr. Robert A. Stewart, aged 72 years, 8 months and 6 days.

The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in Waukesha County. He came west from Onondaga Co., N.Y., in May, 1837, and spent three summers in Milwaukee, working at his trade, making occasional trips out land hunting. He selected his present farm and left it to be held by his brothers until he could move his family out. This he did in 1842; since then he has resided continuously on the same farm.

His father was Alexander Stewart, whom many of our old settlers will remember. His brothers Charles, Archibald, and sisters Jenette and Catharine were also well known here in early times.

He was connected with the Episcopal church from its earliest organization till his death. He was County Supervisor under the district system, for two years, representing the north-east district. He was often called to different town offices.

His delight was not in public employment but in his home and home life. He managed his farm to the last. Industrious, courageous, and persevering, he made his home with his own labor, with no capital to start on and no outside help. Honest, always, he can truthfully be said no man was ever deprived by him of his just dues or defrauded of the least of his right. -- He now rests from his labors and his memory alone remains.

Historical Article Excerpt

William Stewart [Robert's brother] settled in the town of Pewaukee in 1837. His parents, Alexander and Margaret (Sinclair) Stewart arrived in 1840. His brother, Robert, had joined him in 1837, but had returned east for his family and came back in 1842. William and his father built the old academy building used as a Female seminary, on the present site of the First Reformed church in Waukesha, while he and his brother plastered the First Presbyterian church in Milwaukee.

Robert built himself a log house, later a brick one which still stands. He had married Ann Janet Hibbard in 1833 and they had three children: Isaac Newton, one time superintendent of Waukesha county schools and writer; Mary E., teacher and editorial writer for the Milwaukee Journal; Frances, who became the mother of the late Dr. Will Witte of Milwaukee.
