Biography
Betsy (Stevens) Wyche is a part of US Black heritage.
Betsy was born about 1823 in Georgia. Her LNAB is as yet unknown. The surname of Stevens is being used as Billy Stevens was her first known slave owner.
According to her daughter Emily Mays' interview for the Slave Narratives in 1937, [1]:
- Her mother was Betsy Wych who was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia. Her father, Peter Wych, was part Indian and a free man until he was captured in Virginia, taken to Georgia and sold into slavery to the Wych family in Macon. He was cook at the Wych's "The Brown House" for years then sold to Billy Stevens in Upson County.
- Betsy and Peter were married by jumping the broom while at Billy Steven's plantation. Emily was their 15th child of the 16 they had. Her mother died when she was seven (about 9, based on the 1870 census).
In the 1870 census Betsey (age 47) was in Monroe, Georgia, United States.[2]
