John was born 29 September 1687, the son of Sir Thomas Stewart, 1st Baronet, and his wife Lady Jean Mackenzie. He was an officer in the army, eventually reaching the rank of Colonel, and succeeded his brother George, as 3rd Baronet Steuart of Grandtully and Murtly on 1 November 1759.
He died 14 June 1764 aged 76.
He married firstly, 13 January 1725, Elizabeth Mackenzie, second and youngest daughter and co-heir of his maternal uncle, Hon. Sir James Mackenzie, 1st Baronet of Roystoun,
Secondly, 4 August 1746, Lady Jane Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 2nd Marquess of Douglas, and his second wife, Lady Mary Kerr; and sister of Archibald Douglas, Duke of Douglas. They supposedly had twin sons;
Thirdly 12 September 1761 at Edinburgh, Hon. Helen Murray, sixth and youngest daughter of Alexander Murray, 4th Lord Elibank, and his wife, Elizabeth Stirling.

John Steuart was born in 1700.
