Biography

Matilda Stephens was born in 1863 in Bulley, Gloucestershire, England,^[1][2]the daughter of William Stephens and Tabitha (Holford) Stephens.

She emigrated to the United States in 1883, settled in Greeley, Colorado, and married James Bradley February 4, 1888.They had at least three children.^[3]After her husband died, she married Mr. Condon.

She died May 24, 1951 in Birmingham, Alabama at the home of her daughter.

Research

According to a note by her niece, Pauline Tabitha Stephens, it's possible that Matilda emigrated to Colorado, United States, and is possibly buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley, Colorado.

With this information, further research shows a Greeley Daily Tribune death notice for Mrs. M. B. Condon, whose maiden name is Matilda Stephens, born in England and further research verifies that this is the correct Matilda Stephens.

In 1982 I traveled to England and planned to research the family of my great-grandfather, Benj Stephens b. 1866. There I found records, including his birth certificate, showing that he was born in the small parish of Bulley in Gloucestershire. I visited Bulley and found the home the family had built and which was called "Hilltop." Subsequently I found a family member, my 2nd cousin twice removed, we searched parish records together, and visited the family home, which my cousin remembered visiting often when he was young. He also gave me names of other family members and we traveled the area together so he could show me the neighboring villages where our families had lived. It was a tremendously rewarding visit.
