Biography

Dora was the daughter of James Wilberforce Stephen and his wife Katharine Rose Vernon.

She and her twin sister Ida were born on 14 June 1867 in East St Kilda, Victoria, Australia.^[1] A birth notice in the Argus recorded: "STEPHEN. – On the 14th inst., at Merton, East St. Kilda, the wife of J. Wilberforce Stephen, Esq., of twin daughters."^[2] They were christened on 29 June 1867 at St Mary's, Caulfield.^[3][4]

Dora married Arthur Gisborne Babington Ravenscroft on 10 December 1892 in Elsternwick, Victoria.^[5] The Argus reported: "RAVENSCROFT—STEPHEN.—On the 10th inst., at St. Stephen's Church, Elsternwick, by the Rev. J. Stanley Low, Arthur G. B. Ravenscroft, youngest son of H. W. Ravenscroft, solicitor, Bedford Row, London, to Dora Vernon, youngest daughter of the late Mr. Justice Stephen."^[6]

At the 1921 England Census, Dora (54) was recorded as a widow, living at 21 Chilworth St, Paddington, London. Living with her was her sister Ida (54), a voluntary social worker, and daughter Doris (18), who was employed doing secretarial work for the American Red Cross.^[7]

She died on 7 May 1943, aged 75, in Addlestone, Surrey, Eng;and.^[8][9]

Her will was proved at Llandudno on 3 September 1943 by Hugh Christopher Whitehead, solicitor, and Doris Rose Griffiths, widow. The probate calendar records: "RAVENSCROFT Dora Vernon of 11 Alexandra-mansions Kings-road Chelsea London widow died 7 May 1943 at Kingthorpe Nursing Home Addlestone Surrey".^[9]
